Popular Baby Names: Names on the upswing

What are the baby names moving up fastest in popularity? It’s easy enough to follow those near the top, but which are the less visible, below-the-radar climbers? We took a look at the names that have risen at least 400 places in the past five years, and we found some real surprises such as triplets Adalyn, Adalynn and Adelyn, unconventional spellings like Charlee, Londyn and Karter, kissing cousins Kinley, Kenley, Kinsley and Brynlee–not to mention Yaretzi, which rose 563 places to reach Number 375.
Here are a dozen rapidly-climbing names that are both usable and explicable —often via a celebrity connection.

No longer just a luxury car brand or a butler name, Bentley has made the greatest leap of all—rising an amazing 915 places in five years, due largely to two reality show inspirations: The Bachelorette contestant Bentley Williams, and, more majorly, little Bentley Cadence Edwards, son of Maci Bookout on Teen Mom. Maci has also been one of the big movers and so has Brantley.

Giuliana is spelled this way: “Giu” not “Gui”.

If you name your daughter Khloe there’s something wrong with you. The names I like from this list are: Mila, Olive, Giuliana, Gemma and Eloise. The others are a little too “trendy” for me.

I really don’t like most of these names. LOVE Eloise and like Gemma but most of the others seem really trendy/kind of trashy.

I don’t see the problem of naming your daughter Khloe, it may seem made up and ‘unique’ but it is the original Greek spelling of Chloe.

Anyway…I think the only name I like on this list is Gemma, so pretty!

I love, love, LOVE Gemma!! And I think Khloe is cute, but I prefer the name spelling Chloe. I also like Olive, Mila, and Eloise.

I don’t think I like many of the boy names on this list, except perhaps Finley. Finley for a boy.I do like Eloise and Olive a lot, and Mila and Gemma are lovely, too.

What a great list! Love most of these names, especially Gemma & Dexter.

I have loved Dexter since I saw Cary Grant in “Philadelphia Story” as C. K. Dexter Haven. A much classier reason to name your child Dexter. Diane Keaton’s daughter is named Dexter, so it can be a girl’s name, just not one I would give.

Mila is a gorgeous name, I hope it doesn’t become uber-trendy. Gemma time was coming since Emma’s popularity went through the roof.

Finley is great on a boy, but trashy stripper name on a girl.

It kills me to see some of my favorites on this list! I would have been so much happier if Gemma, Finley, Eloise, Mila and Aria had remained uncommon gems. Aria in particular. I hate seeing names rise super fast knowing someday they might have a higher chance of seeming dated.

As for Bentley… Nothing says great baby name inspiration like a luxury car and reality tv stars….

I’ve always loved Olive (and it’s been my favourite colour for forever), and Gemma. I like Dexter too. Brings to mind other “nerdy” names that are cool again…Duncan, Harvey, and (my fave) Winston.

Most surprising part of this blog- Charlotte Church has a son?! My first thought was: isn’t she still 12?

Car names are tacky/trashy, yuck. Lots of the other names on this list are great though!!

I have a real issue with naming a child after a luxury brand or material object (Bentley, Mercedes, Cash, Chanel) What does that say to your child about your values? That you think material goods are so important you NAME your CHILD after them? Yeesh, not exactly a value to grow on. Also: Khloe is way too associated with those reality women & that’s another unfortunate value to pass along, the pursuit of fame. Society will do enough pushing a child in this direction without mum & dad’s stamp of approval/help.

It’s weird… this is the first list on Nameberry of which I really hate every name listed. Like, all of them. No exceptions.

In defense of car names: most cars are named for the person who started the company, so they are legitimate last names. Surnames are huge as first names right now, and so it makes sense to me that some “car names” are going to be used for children. Also, if I named a daughter Mercedes (which is a name that I love), it wouldn’t be because of the car, but because of the character in Count of Monte Cristo. Everyone has different name associations. I know a kid who was named Cash because it’s his mother’s maiden name.

I don’t know if I like Finley on a girl. Aria, Olive and Mila are cute though

although i don’t think anything can ever compare to the aiden/jayden/cayden/brayden phenomenon (and alllll the alternative spellings), there does seem to be something brewing among girls names with the -inley sound: finley, brynlee, quinley, kinley. and there are a lot of -ley, -lee, -leigh possibilities for spellings. i don’t necessarily hate finley, but these rhyming/spelling possibilities suggest it’s going to be a name people will be exhausted by pretty fast, no?

Not a fan of luxury or food names on people, save it for a pet. Love Mila, Aria, Elouise and Gemma even though I usually prefer stronger more gender neutral names for girls and boys.

As for the ly, leigh, lee, names for girls I agree its a huge trend.Finley, Riley, Harley on a girl, even though I like surname/gender neutral names, makes me cringe.

Labmama, I think Charlotte Church has at least 2 kids (I think her daughter is named Ruby?) and an ex-fiance. Her personal life was all over the tabloids in the UK a few years ago :).

Finley is such an awesome boy name, I hate seeing it used on girls. Love Gemma and Mila, hate Jax and Bentley.

I love Aria and Gemma. I think Italian names are popular, because they are so many Americans of Italian descent. I also like Finley for a girl. Finley for a girl reminds me of the character from Jenny B. Jones’s Save the Date and There You’ll Find Me.

I wouldn’t be able to get over the serial killer associations for Dexter. I think Dexter’s sister should be named Ziva.

I love…
Eloise, Aria, Olive, Mila, Finley for a boy on a girl it’s tacky also in the UK Finley is commonly associated with boys. Along with these I like Dexter and Kellan. Gemma seems so dated now as a Brit I know so many teenagers called Gemma. Any name associated with luxury items like Bentley is awful so capitalistic.

I don’t know. If a friend had a son and named him Bentley, I wouldn’t jump for joy but I wouldn’t freak out and say that Bentley is a horrible name. To each their own, right? Suddenly I have discovered that I have a spot for Milena nn Mila. Sigh. Now , if you excuse me, I got to ho daydream.

Just saw the announcement on Facebook that some friends named their new baby Dexter. I’ve loved it since Dexter’s Laboratory, but didn’t want to saddle my kid with serial killer baggage. That said, I’m loving that I get to hear it on a regular basis now 🙂

I really like the names Kellan and Bentley for boys. And for girls I adore Mila.
However, I feel the spelling Khloe isn’t very attractive! I much prefer the Chloe spelling.
