The Berries Have Spoken: 89 More Great Baby Names Now

By Abby Sandel

Earlier this month, we shared our list of the Best Baby Names Right Now. We declared them the right mix of authentic and creativie, perfect for 2016, and wearable into the 22nd century, too.

It was so much fun to hear your reactions. Perhaps the most controversial name? John, dismissed as boring and obvious after so many years of popularity.

We also asked you to add one more name to our list. Berries never disappoint! Your suggestions ranged from the head-smacking “Why didn’t that one make the cut?” to a few that we’re watching for 2017.

Seventeen of the names received multiple mentions, so let’s start with those:

FelixFelix was the runaway favorite, with six votes.

Beatrix – Not far behind, literary Beatrix garnered three votes.

Dashiell – A Top 100 on Nameberry, but still rare in the US

Harriet – LauraJ88 called this name “entirely underused and fabulous.”

Mabel – teacupsandtiaras cited the quirky Disney Channel animated series Gravity Falls for boosting Mabel

Rose – ShaelynnSophia called Rose equal parts “simple and classic”

Viola A Shakespeare-inspired alternative to Violet

Zelda – BlueJuniper wrote that Zelda has “just the right balance of charm, vintage and sass for a 2016 baby”

Here are the names that each received two mentions:

Baxter – Care mentioned the ongoing influence of Downton Abbey on baby naming

Dominic – LuMary also suggested Mickey as a “good mid-century nickname” for Dominic

Everett – teacupsandtiaras told us that all of her friends are choosing this name for their sons

Ike – mckaylove called it “short and strong”

Milo Currently in Nameberry’s Top Ten

Peter A classic boys’ name due for a revival

Violet Another Downton Abbey name
