Liv Origin and Meaning

The name Liv is a girl's name of Norse origin meaning "life".

The fame of actress and Aerosmith daughter Liv Tyler helped to infuse life into this short but solid Scandinavian name that was chosen for her daughter by Julianne Moore.

Liv Tyler was given the name after her mother, Bebe Buell, saw an image of Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann on the cover of TV Guide shortly before her daughter's birth.

Liv combines the succinct charm of a nickname—people might assume it's short for Olivia—with the solidity of being a classic stand-alone Scandinavian name with a life-force meaning.

I absolutely hate this name. I know 'hate' is a pretty strong word but it's exactly how I feel. It's too short and basic for me.

This is my name... I used to not like it when i was Little, but now I love it and am proud of it. I don't love main stream names, so this name is perfect for me i think

Hahaha, Oh my gosh, I forgot about that comment. Oops! I was very blunt back then, and didn't really think about what I was posting. I regret it all, though, and try to make better comments these days.

Sel Says:

Yuck? Seriously? Your name is Theodora, really no room to talk. 🙄 And for the record I was being sarcastic if you couldn't tell.

dancinberry Says:

My name. Originally Olivia, but it reminded me of olives and I hate olives. But I love the name Liv, "short and solid", like me (:

autumnreverie Says:

It also means "protection."

EW314 Says:

I really, really love this! I love its strength, brevity and lightness. I like it pronounced "authentically" (leev), but I also like the anglicised pronunciation (liv), and I'd probably go with the latter to avoid constant mispronunciation here in the UK. I'd definitely use this for a daughter!

georgiaO Says:

The pronounciation for this in Norse is Leev and not Liv?

georgiaO Says:

I love it much more than Livia or Olivia, so cute! It means "life" in Sweden, so I'm all for it :)

I am obsessed with this name, part of it is due to Liv Tyler. This will probably end up being my kid's name. I'm set on short names. I also love Mia, but Liv is a lot fresher.
