Gideon Origin and Meaning

The name Gideon is a boy's name of Hebrew origin meaning "hewer; or, having a stump for a hand".

Gideon is a no-longer neglected Old Testament name, but still makes an excellent choice for parents looking to move beyond such overused biblicals as Benjamin and Jacob. In the Old Testament, Gideon was a judge called on by God to rescue the Jews from the Midianites, and the name was popular among the Puritans.

Gideon was given a spike by the short-lived TV series Gideon's Crossing, and has been heard more recently as a main character in Criminal Minds, as Molly Weasley's brother Gideon Prewett in the Harry Potter series, and as an anti-hero, Gideon Gordon Graves, in the Scott Pilgrim series.

The ubiquitous, in-every-hotel-room Gideon bibles were named because Gideon symbolizes great work done by few people.

Among the celebs who have chosen Gideon for their sons are Neil Patrick Harris and Ziggy Marley.

Eliza_Dot Says:

This is one of those names that I really really want to love but there is just something about it that I don't like. It's a strong, handsome name, the biblical association is fantastic, there are few great literary Gideon's, and "mighty warrior" is an awesome meaning, but I still don't love it. Maybe it's the "Gid" part? I think Geo could work as a nn and I much prefer it to Giddy, Deon, and Ian. I'm not a huge fan of many other G names for boys either.

Gideon Grey.

Blue Cookies Says:

I'd call him Gid.

autumnreverie Says:

What are the sources for this name meaning "mighty warrior" and "having a stump for a hand"?

autumnreverie Says:

That isn't the meaning of Gideon. It means "feller, hewer."

NameObsession Says:

My little brother's name is Gideon. We call him Gid and Giddy. When he was younger he had another nickname too but it was unrelated to his name.

momma3point0 Says:

My son's name <3. Can't imagine him as anything else! He loves it too. "Mighty warrior", what little boy wouldn't? We call him Giddy :)

CordliaMae Says:

I call my son Ged, pronounced Jed which are his initials.
Gideon Edward Daniel :)

TeacherLady Says:

I love love love this name, if we have a boy. However, my DH is not as into it. :(

pachamama Says:

My son's name is Gideon and we call him Gidge! It fits him well.

eveyalecia Says:

As others have said, I'm not sure where this "stump for a hand" meaning is coming from. However, Gideon also doesn't mean "mighty warrior" (but the biblical namesake was a mighty warrior). Gideon means "feller"/"hewer" in Hebrew.

Essa Says:

I personally love both names! They're right up there on my lists too.

Essa Says:

Same here. Gideon is great, I think my favourite nickname is Gid but it's more 'best of a bad bunch' rather than actually liking it. The only other ones i can think of are Giddy, Eon (like Ian?) and perhaps Gidda.

Shaebaby Says:

Fell in love with this name during Criminal Minds. Now can't put the idea of Gideon Reid as a name to rest..

Nerdy_cat Says:

This was the first boys name I ever truly loved, I've loved it since I was a preteen, and now it's the name of my son. I think it hits that "uncommon yet familiar" sweet spot and I love the "mighty warrior" meaning that others have mentioned.

adklined Says:

Do you have a nickname for him? I love the name but I'm a big nickname person and am not a fan of deon...

SB Says:

I was gonna say... I really liked the name till I saw the meaning. Let's just go with your definition lol

snowsbeloved Says:

My top two boy names are Solomon and Gideon...time to invest for riding lessons :)

Reese1976 Says:

I personally really like this name and might consider it if we have a boy. I think people think of a horse when they hear this name is maybe it sounding kinda like "Giddyap", but I still really like it!

Waverly123 Says:

I really like the written look of Gideon, but I'm not sure how much I love the sound. I think I love it, but I need to keep saying it more!

KassemJ Says:

I normally don't say this, but I legitimately don't get the appeal of this name. It's so ugly and reminds me of old stable horses! It also beat out my personal favorite Gabriel, which is just an enigma. On the bright side, at least it's a meaningful name with a good Biblical connotation.

keniece Says:

Absolutely love this name, was introduced to it years ago when I read an entire book series with the main character name was Gideon. Granted the character was morally flawed but he was such a strong man.

headintheclouds Says:

Good solid strong classic biblical name that is also not super common, is more of an unusual classic. The name meaning here is terrible and would put me off using it forever, but as other commenters have pointed out, Gideon does have the meaning of "mighty warrior" in other sources, which is very nice. To me, Gideon sounds like a very horse name, like it would be the name of a great stallion owned by an English lord in the 19th century (Solomon has this image for me too). Not sure why though.

aliciagrace Says:

Ian would work, maybe even Dean as it has a simlar sound.

Jsharris18 Says:

Are there any nicknames? Nicknames are not a must but just curious

Guest Says:

Gideon means mighty warrior. The meaning here is wrong.

RoseRed Says:

Everywhere I look, Gideon means "hewer", "destroyer" or "mighty warrior". This is the only place I've seen anything about a stump for a hand. My son is named Gideon, it makes my skin crawl every time I read that. Gotta go buy tiny safety gauntlets.

faithnamer Says:

It's pronounced like Giddy-un (hard 'g').

AnonymousPerson Says:

Is this pronounced "Jideon" or "Guideon"?

aknitica Says:

According to my old baby name book, Gideon means "mighty warrior." Much better than what it's currently listed as meaning.
