Aria Origin and Meaning

The name Aria is a girl's name of Hebrew, Italian origin meaning "air; song or melody".

Aria has origins in both Italian and Hebrew. In the former, Aria's literal meaning, air, is meant as a musical term denoting a kind of song or melody. Hebrew Aria is a variation of Ari, meaning “lion.” In Persian, Aria is a male name, and in Indian it is considered unisex. Arya is an alternate spelling.

The light and airy Aria is an operatic choice moving quickly up the charts and also a current favorite on Nameberry. Aria entered the list in 2000 and has risen since then to the Top 25. Aria's literal meaning, air, is meant as a musical term denoting a kind of song or melody.

Television is definitely helping to popularize the name, with a character on Pretty Little Liars named Aria and Game of Thrones featuring a young heroine named Arya, itself a Top 200 name at this point.

Aria is also a saint's name.

Pop Culture References for the name Aria

rgd Says:

I'm quite surprised Aria is as popular as it is (number 25th) in Australia. I assumed the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Awards would sway parents away from the name. Although, now that I think about it, the industry isn't as big here as it is in the States (and therefore neither are the Awards), and the Oscars never swayed American parents away from the name Oscar (currently ranked 206th).

QueenieGuldbaek Says:

Keep in mind that the same word can have different meanings across languages. E.g. "kiss" means "pee" in Swedish.

ivy194 Says:

This name is SO beautiful! It's a shame it's getting so popular... but still! Gorgeous!

ceruleanstardust Says:

I always thought it was pronounced ah-rye-uh

Few years late to this but i first heard this name from pretty little liars and fell in love with it. I thought it was a beautiful name and I could always imagine myself with a little girl called Aria. I’m really upset with how popular it is now, personally I’ve never heard anyone with this name but I live in Ireland and I don’t think it’s as popular, I’d still name my baby Aria anyways cause I love the name to much

TechnoKitten Says:

I love Ria and Ari but I dislike Aria

Every time I hear the name on pretty little liars I think it just sounds so beautiful! It doesn't have any nicknames, but to some people that would be a bonus

Floris Says:

I think you're right, that is what she meant :)
But if somebody likes/chose that name because they thought it meant song... Then it still is the name for a kind of song.

LanaLee Bellamy Says:

Yeah you're right, I thought she meant the specific translation of "song" :)

Floris Says:

That's so true. But Aria is also the name for a kind of song, the song that accompanies a soloist....

Hillel Says:

Aria is not a Hebrew name and doesn't mean lioness. A male lion is Aryeh in Hebrew, a female lion is L'viah, as any native Hebrew speaker will tell you. Aria is an Italian name, not a Hebrew one. Please correct your website as it's misleading.

headintheclouds Says:

Lively, bright, musical and airy. I prefer Aria to the similar-sounding/looking Arya, which are both currently trendy due to characters in hot TV shows. I like Aria since it's feminine without being flowery, but I don't like that it's shot up so much in such a short time. I just hope Aria won't go down the road of becoming a flash trend that dates the name to the early 2010s.

ispyabrownbair Says:

I think this name is beautiful, however, I am NOT exaggerating when I say that I know at least 7 people who have named their daughter this. The eldest being 11 and the majority being in the last year. Definitely not a name to choose if you don't want your kid to have the same name in a classroom but still a beautiful choice :)

LanaLee Bellamy Says:

Sorry but Aria doesn't mean "song" in italian. "Canzone" is the italian translation of "Song", the real meaning of "Aria" in italian is "Air" :) (Trust me, I'm Italian)

Shannon Says:

It is pronounced ar-ee-ah

amf0224 Says:

I love this name! Actually, I have loved it ever since I began reading Pretty Little Liars but I don't think many people except for teenage girls will associate the name to that. Plus, I think that is such a pretty name for arezo's daughter with an amazing meaning. But, I am a little unsure of the pronunciation. Is it air-ee-uh or are-ee-uh or something else?

Sweekune Says:

I like this. Unusual but simple and with beautiful meanings.

SunKissedChild Says:

What an absolutely gorgeous name and name meaning for your daughter! So beautiful :)

arezo Says:

okay so i liked this name A LOT! aria also means 'song' in italian. also, aria comes from the word "arian." my daughters name "aria" with the middle name "noor", both of them put together mean "song of light."
