From the experts:

Samuel has long been a popular Old Testament classic, and is still a highly popular choice for boys. Its continued use is somewhat propelled by the likability of the friendly nickname Sam, which returned to favor along with fellow former cigar-chomping movie moguls Max and Jake. Sam is now often used on its own, for girls as well as boys.

In the Old Testament, Samuel was one of the great judges and prophets of the Israelites, destined for a holy life from birth. He established the Hebrew monarchy, anointing both Saul and David as kings.

High-profile celebs who have chosen Samuel for their sons include Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, Jack Black, and Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber.

When I was young I told my Dad if I have a boy I'd name him Samuel and call him Sammy. Still waiting for him just not sure this will be his name!

Samuel's such a prevalent, guy-next-door inoffensive name that I feel rather bad for kind of disliking it, or at least the sound of its full version. Almost all the Samuels I know go by Sam, which I like, but the -muel at the end really grates at my ears sound-wise, and looks off to me on paper. Objectively, it's a perennial biblical classic with strong roots and history, and a nice meaning.

The meaning is actually "Heard by God" because Hannah prayed to God for a son and he heard her prayer.

This is my husband's middle name and also the name of one of his grandfathers. It would be a fitting namesake for us to choose someday. In addition, it does also happen to be a really nice, classic name. The nickname Sam is the greatest thing ever, in my opinion.
