Britain's New Top Baby Names Announced!
Great news for British name lovers: the most popular names in England and Wales in 2024 have just been released!
Olivia and Muhammad lead the pack for another year, with some interesting changes below them.
Top 10 Girl Names England and Wales 2024
The top two girl names, Olivia and Amelia, remain unchanged since 2023. Below that, several names have swapped places, and there are two new entries.
Poppy, a well-loved choice for the last 30 years, was last in the Top 10 names in 2015. It returned this year at Number 8. Elsie, which first entered the Top 100 in 2011, has entered the Top 10 for the first time.
They replace Isabella, which now ranks in eleventh place, and Willow, which dropped to Number 21.
Top 10 Boy Names England and Wales 2024
The top three boy names — Muhammad, Noah, and Oliver — remain the same as in 2023. Below them, some names in the Top 10 have changed places, but there is only one new entry. Archie made the Top 10 in 2020, the year after Prince Harry used the name for his son, and now returns at Number 10.
It replaces Henry, which has dropped to fourteenth place.
Fast Rising Names
Within the Top 100, the girl names that leaped up in popularity this year are led by E initials. Eden jumped up 27 spots, Eloise rose by 24 places, and Elodie and Maryam both rose 20 places. Other fast-rising girl names include several with similar sounds — Raya, Maya, Myla, Nora, Rosa — as well as Margot, Hazel, and Arabella.
For the first time ever, Sofia ranks higher than Sophia, as parents start to favor a fresher spelling.
In the Top 100 boy names, Yahya — the Arabic form of John — leapt up 33 places, followed by Vinnie, which rose 20 spots, and Elias, which rose by 17. Other fast-climbing boy names included Arabic favorites Mohammad, Yusuf, and Musa, as well as Nathan, Austin, and Myles.
Many British boy names are remarkably stable in popularity. 14 names did not change rank at all from 2023 to 2024, and a further 12 only moved up or down one place.
Below is the full Top 100 list for England and Wales this year.
Top 100 Girl Names in England and Wales 2024
There were seven new (or returning) girl names in the Top 100. The highest entry was Eloise, ranking at Number 85, followed by Nora, Myla, Rosa, Athena, Sara, and Zoe.
The names that dropped out of the Top 100 were Gracie, Molly, Nevaeh, Hannah, Lilah, and both Autumn and Summer. Hannah and Molly were Top 20 names around the year 2000, but as children born then start to become parents themselves, their popularity has run its course.
