About Luca
The related Lucas and Luke are both hugely popular boy names in the US and internationally, and now Luca has joined them on boys' popularity lists around the world.
Luca for boys#14 US
That's an astonishing success story for a name that was virtually unknown a generation ago. Only 13 baby boys were named Luca in the US in 1980, and by 1990 there were still only 32 baby boys given that name.
But by the turn of this century, Luca took off and has now surpassed his more familiar brother Luke in the US. With all its spellings counted together, Luca makes the Top 10 in our Playground Analysis.
Boy names ending in vowel sounds may have felt too feminine to early generations who lived by more conventional gender rules. And that old school he-man America also may have rejected names like Luca for being too "foreign". But in this era of Noah and Mateo, Elijah and Ezra, Luca has finally found widespread acceptance.
Along with its popularity in the US, Luca ranks highly in a range of countries that speak English, Spanish, French, and German, among others. While Luca is technically related to Luke and Lucas and so takes their ancient Roman habitational meaning, you might also see it as a relative of Lucius or Lucian, meaning light.
Colin Firth and his Italian wife chose Luca for one of their sons, as did Hilary Duff, Vincent d'Onofrio, Rebecca Minkoff, and Jacinda Barrett and Gabriel Macht.
Luca for girls#2675 US
Very much a boy's name in Italy, it's beginning to be seen as a unisex possibility here: actress Jennie Garth used it for her daughter, as did influencers Alyssa and Dallin Johnson, When spelled Lucca as in the Italian city, it can also be considered one of the place names along with Venezia, Roma, and Milana that make great Italian names for girls.
In Hungary, Luca, pronounced LOO-tsaw is a hugely popular choice, and is used as a variation of Lucia. Luca entered the Top 30 in Hungary back in the 2000s and had climbed to the Top 10 by 2012. Since then, it's taken the Number One spot, appearing alongside Hanna and Zoé.
In the US, 62 girls were called Luca in a recent year, which is equivalent to less than 1% of all Lucas born.
Pronounced LOO-kuh.
As of October 2026, Luca ranked #14 in US births in 2025 SSA, Nameberry popularity #56.
