Most Popular British Names A to Z

Most Popular British Names A to Z

The most popular British names from A–Z might seem like a straightforward list, but not so fast. Just as every state in America has different name preferences, so do the four regions that make up the UK.

Are Amelia and Arthur the most popular British A names? Yes, in England and Wales, but parents in Scotland prefer Archie for boys, while parents in Northern Ireland are more likely to pick Aoife for girls

There are some names that the British regions do agree on, however. For girls, Bonnie, Charlotte, Daisy, Grace, Isla, Jessica, Lily, Olivia, Quinn, Rosie, Thea, Una, Violet, Willow and Zara come out on top across the board. For boys, George, Isaac, Kai, Noah, William, and Xander are shared the favorites.

While these names might be the most popular choice for their letter in all four regions, that doesn't mean they receive the same amount of love. Violet for example ranks at #45 in England, but in Northern Ireland, it sits at #159! Similarly, George is in the Top 10 in England and Wales, but at #25 in Northern Ireland and at #58 in Scotland.

Notable regional differences include names from Celtic languages — like Nansi and Macsen in Wales, Brodie and Finlay in Scotland, and Fiadh and Oisin in Northern Ireland. In England and Scotland, there are also a number of Arabic names representing their letter, including Umar, Yusuf, Muhammad, and Khadija, which reflects the larger Muslim communities in these regions.

Of the four nations, Northern Ireland's Top A-Z features the most uniquely regional choices, with five names for girls and seven names for boys appearing only on the Northern Ireland list. Scotland features the least unique names with only one name for girls (Nova) and three for boys (Rory, Parker, Archie) being exclusive to the region.

One fun note is that the top H names for boys are each a different variant of Henry: Henry in England, Harri (the Welsh form) in Wales, Harris (a local island) in Scotland, and Harry in Northern Ireland.

On the subject of variants, while the four nations don't entirely agree on the top T, V, and Z names for boys, the featured names for each letter are variations of each other! Theodore and Theo, Vincent and Vinnie, and Zachary and Zach are the top choices for their letters, while for girls, the regions are split over Sophia and Sophie.

Here are the most popular names from A–Z in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland using the most recent data as of April 2025.
