About this list

When I started to make a list of all the baby names in or near the US Top 1000 that had more than one spelling, I very quickly became overwhelmed by the sheer number of names and variations.

I knew of course that spelling variations had become only more popular over time. But I didn't imagine that I would find more than 1000 names that were different ways of spelling the same names.

How is that even possible? The fact is that most names in the Top 1000 have more than one spelling, including classic names like Olivia and John which we think of as being spelled only one way. But no, there's also Alivia and Olyvia, Jon and Gian.

And then there are the many names that have many, many spellings, all of them popular enough to rank in the Top 1000 or at least come very close. Jackson may be the king of spelling variations, spawning Jaxson, Jaxon, and Jaxxon, along with Jax and Jaxx, Jaxton and Jaxten.

Along with literally thousands more spellings that we haven't listed here. Five baby boys were named Jaxcen and Jaxzon, for instance. Five were also named Akilles, Avory, Brandson, Dechlan, Huddson, Issaac, Issak, Jadin, Jaece, Robbin, Zakarii — far too many spellings to include on any single list.

Many of the spelling variations that made this list are equally acceptable: Catherine, Katherine, and Kathryn, and Stephen and Steven are all widely established. It's equally proper to spell Elliot as Eliot and Elliott.

The issue with names that have all these popular spellings is that you might hear them a lot more than you'd expect and than you want to. Brinley, Brinleigh, Brynlee, and Brynleigh all sound exactly alike and were given to a collective 2500 baby girls last year — and that's not counting the babies who got rarer spellings of the name.
