TV Baby Names: The current coolest characters

TV baby names

By Linda Rosenkrantz

Let’s face it—most TV character names are predictable and dull.  It’s almost as though the screenwriters close their eyes and stick a pin into a list of what seem like age-appropriate monikers—Jim for Grandpa, Jack for Dad, Jackson for Son or Betty for Grandma, Beth for Mom and Becca for Girl.

But luckily there are some exceptions, the creative minority that shine out from the others like glistening gems.  The names below are drawn from the character lists of current shows or those that have recently expired—running on a bewildering number of channels—network, cable and online.  Reality and animated shows not included.

I’ve starred the names that have already seemed to have had an influence in the real world.

I met a Maeby today, although I think it was spelled Maebe. The name was suprisingly wearable in real life. I wanted to ask her mom if she was a fan of Arrested Development, but I thought that was too personal.

For the girls: I love Arizona, Artemis, Ivy, Temperance, and Violet. I like Jules as a nickname. I can’t get behind Adalind, because the character is a nasty piece of work.

For the boys: I like Alaric, Cyrus, Deacon, Lafayette, Lane, and Tobias. And Raylan is a guilty pleasure. I just think Timothy Olyphant is hot, but name seems better when he’s walking around with it.

Irisa makes me happy. I might have a new favorite 🙂

Ahhh, I wish Aria would stop being cool so i can be guaranteed it won’t be too popular by the time I have kids. I’ve loved it for years for the musical connotations now Arya is my favourite character on Game of Thrones.

Oh it is probably because I am an English child but I have never heard of any TV programs. I am more of the ‘Tracy Beaker’ watcher if you are only counting made up stories. Other than that it is documentaries, Springwatch or Strictly Come Dancing. I think most of the characters I watch are pretty well named.

Lemon is my favorite!

I would add Gemma from Sons of Anarchy, Sybil from Downton (loved that one for yrs, so I noticed that it got a major interest bump on NB after the show premiered), Haddie from Parenthood, and June from Don’t Mess with the B in Apt 23.

I am inspired by Ziva, Cora, and Temperance! I was shocked that Temperance is catching on. It took over five or six seasons of the show for Temperance to make the 1000. I also like Sybil ie Downton Abbey, but prefer Sibyl spelling. Also I would say Edith is also rising thanks to the Downton Abbey. We love the Crawleys!

Rory and River from Doctor Who?

I love Ziva, but I wonder if everyone will be asking her if her parents loved NCIS (which I do, but I think I would get tired of it). But 158 parents either didn’t know the reference, or ignored it.
It’s two syllable, starts with ‘z’ and also has a significant pop culture reference. Ziva’s such a pretty name with an amazing meaning.

I cannot warm to Arya, as it’s just one letter shy of Aryan, and that isn’t good.

I have never seen an episode of this Heart of Dixie, but with a Magnolia, Lemon, Tansy and Brick, they may have a name nerd on the writing staff : )

The names that I’ve taken to solely because of hearing them repeated on shows that I watch are Thor (because it became a wearable name and not just a God), Maeby and Cecelia/Cece.

To me Dexter seems to have had the biggest influence of all these names. And would anyone really use Gob in real life?

@maggiemary I’m in the same boat as you – I see Arya, and I cringe a teeny bit. On the flip side, I do love Aria.

Or maybe Amelia is popular because of Doctor Who??? Amy’s full name is Amelia Jessica Pond.

The character Artemis on Always Sunny in Philadelphia does NOT add much appeal to the name!

@maggiemary and @Name_Walrus, that’s how I feel about Arya too. Aria is okay, but it is just way too popular right now for my taste.

For anyone who doesn’t know, Gob is pronounced like Job and is actually an acronym for George Oscar Bluth. So, no, I don’t think anyone would actually use it in real life haha

i want to write for tv, and the lack of creativity is one of my biggest pet peeves! sibsets are another issue – like, if you have a daughter named something like alice, why is the son named kayden?

unrelated to names i might use irl, i was so tickled to see that my girl kenzi (lost girl) got a shout-out! yay for lg 🙂
