Tobias Origin and Meaning

The name Tobias is a boy's name of Hebrew, Greek origin meaning "God is good".

Tobias is the Greek form of the Hebrew Tobiah, which was derived from the name Toviyah. Toviyah was created from the elements tov, meaning “good” and yah, representing the Hebrew God. Tobias is the name of several biblical figures but is primarily associated with the story of Tobias and the Angel.

Tobias is one of a number of s-ending boys' names that are riding a wave of popularity.

With its Old Testament-Dickensian feel, it's a name with a distinguished pedigree—Tobias Smollett, for instance, was a major eighteenth century Scottish novelist—that also has a modern feel. A contemporary bearer is Tobias Wolff, author of A Boy's Life. Tobias Snape, meanwhile, is a Harry Potter character.

The short form Toby has a life of its own, used independently at least as far back as Shakespeare's time, with Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth Night. Toby also was the name of a character on The West Wing. Actor Tobey Maguire was born Tobias and named his son Otis Tobias.

There is also the rarely used but still viable daddy of them all, Tobiah, the name of a rebel Hebrew king.

I had an Aunt tell me I wasn't naming my dog, when she found out our Son's name was going to be Toby. We ended up naming him Tobias. Mostly goes by Toby. His dad calls him Tobs. He loves his name!

Tobias Schultz Says:

In response to those concerned about the nick name Toby. I use Tobias in my professional life, my family calls me Toby, the bulk of my friends have shortened it even further to simply Tob (with a hard "o") I never had a problem with any of them. However, it does annoy me when someone says "Tobias? Do they call you Toby? My (insert relative) had a (insert pet) named Toby."

Ross Says:

We named our son Tobias. We never used the short form Toby. He's 8 now and he hates it if someone calls him Toby.

We chose Tobias as we had a friend who had visitors from Denmark who had a son named Tobias. We had an instant placement adoption. We got a phone call at noon, and he was ours at 3pm. We had lots of girl names but only one boy name.

I think I might have changed my mind, since writing this comment. I love Tobias with Toby for short, at least as much as just Toby, as an independent name. If that makes sense. I am shifting in my feelings, in the direction of Tobias/Toby, basically. I still love Toby on its own, though. 😃

Catalan1 Says:

I love tobias as its my eldest name (Roman and Tobias, twins!!)

I like Joshua too, but Tobias and Toby are excellent names.

I do like this, but feel that Toby is fine in its own right, and I tend to prefer it. It's one of my favourite boys' names.

stella2007 Says:

Haha exactly what I thought! But let's be honest he's an amazingly quirky character on the show. If anything it makes me like the name more. :)

Love the meaning but not nickname Toby. Bethany Hamilton names her son this!

gems Says:

I really like this name, but the connection to the Arrested Development's Tobias Fünke (who is hilarious, don't get me wrong) is incredibly discouraging.

Diana Says:

You should add in Tobias Eaton from Divergent. It's a pretty popular series of books and the movies even more so. That's most likely why it's getting really popular right now. So yeah, definitely add that into the description!

Starelli Says:

Tobias Fünke, anyone?

Shannon Says:

Sounds like a very strong name. Definitely, every time I hear this name it reminds me of Tobias Eden from The Divergent Series, that's not a bad thing; Tobias is a hero and a leader.

EW314 Says:

I LOVE this name! It's so strong, dignified and masculine. The only problem for me is that I'm not too keen on Toby, and I can't really think of any other plausible nicknames.

headintheclouds Says:

Tobias is an awesome name! It sounds kind of bluesy and effortlessly cool to me, plus modern-hip while also being vintage and with strong biblical roots. The nickname Toby: love! The only point I don't quite like about the name is the -bias sound.

claraminta Says:

I'm kind of in the middle with Tobias. The 'bias' part at the end makes me not like it as much.

ZombieMommy Says:

I am so glad I chose to name my son Tobias instead of our second choice, Joshua. It's feels much more distinctive to me. We also call him Toby and that fits him really well.

Guest Says:

In Ohio, there are funeral homes named after the Tobias family. I'll be the first to admit that I occasionally browse obits for name inspiration, but it's too eerie to actually consider this name for my son since it is an entire funeral home establishment.
