About Sofia
Sofia is a refined variation of the Greek name Sophia, which was derived directly from sophia, the Greek word for wisdom. It was the name of a Roman saint—the mother of Faith, Hope, and Charity—and queens of Russia and Spain.
This streamlined spelling is widely used throughout Europe, in Italy, Spain, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, while in the US it entered the Top 10 for the first time in 2024. This spelling lends itself to fresh feeling nickname Fia too.
The proportion of babies called Sofia vs. Sophia has been increasing, now standing at about 40%, up from around 33% in 2000.
The Disney Junior show Sofia The Firstgave Sofia an elegant, royal feel and it also has plenty of celeb endorsement. Lisa Remini, Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy all named their daughters Sofia.
Variants and diminutives of the name include Sophie, Sofie, Sonia, Zosia, Sosie, and Vivi.
Sofia is also given to boys, where it ranks #8819 in the US.
Pronounced so-FEE-uh.
As of October 2026, Sofia ranked #9 in US births in 2025 SSA, Nameberry popularity #210.
