Best New Names In The Top 1000!

America’s brand new top baby names are here!

While there was not a whole lot of movement at the top of the charts — apart from Sofia replacing Luna in the Top 10 baby names, and Theodore leaping up into the Top 5 — you'll find the real good stuff if you scroll a bit further down the list.

Of all babies born in the US in 2024, 71% received a name in the Top 1000. The last two years have been the lowest on record, with fewer babies receiving a Top 1000 name than ever before — showing the increased variety and individualism of the name pool.

And the gender gap continues to narrow. Boy names, which have historically been much more stable and traditional, are now really starting to catch up with the diversity of the girl name pool.

To make the Top 1000 in 2024, a name had to be given to at least 257 girls or at least 225 boys. Just squeaking into the final spots were Karter and Raina for girls, and Aden, Ishaan, Kace, and Stefan for boys.

New Names in the Top 1000

This year, 43 new girl names and 44 new boy names debuted in the Top 1000 or returned after a hiatus.

The highest-ranking new entrant for girls is Rowyn in at Number 782. Rowyn is a hybrid of Rowan (one of the most popular unisex names) with Elowyn, which is one of the fastest-rising girl names of the last three years, and now ranks in the Top 500.

On the boys' side, Colsen is the highest-ranking new entrant at Number 651, incorporating some of the trendiest mix-and-match syllables. It joins alternative spellings Colson, Coleson, and Kolson, which also rank in the Top 1000.

They replace dropouts including fading twentieth-century names like Brendan, Whitney, and Savanna; unisex names including Kai for girls and Nova for boys; and several names that are hovering in the will-they-won't-they-get-popular zone, such as Winifred, Blessing, Boaz, and Wren (for boys).

Let’s take a closer look at some of the most promising new names in this year’s Top 1000. You can also find a full tally of 2024’s new entrants below.

Hot New Girl Names In The Top 1000

Analeia

This melodic compound of Ana and Leia — with allusions to both the Bible and Star Wars — was the fifth fastest rising name of 2024.

Emi

Elegant Emi is one of the most versatile names around. It can be a nickname for any "Em" name — making a refreshing alternative to Emmie or Emmy — and also has ties to many cultures.

Icelynn

Icelynn is quite literally one of the coolest names of the moment. It combines several elements: the idea of ice, the place name style of Iceland, the "ai"sound of Isla and Ivy, and an evergreen -lynn ending. It was one of the fastest-rising names of 2023, and has continued its climb into the Top 1000 in 2024.

Keziah

While boy names from the Old Testament are an established trend, girl names have slower to catch up... but Keziah is one of the most promising! One of the lovely daughters of Job, Keziah

Lavender

This sweet-smelling botanical name has really taken off in the last decade, as OG Harry Potter fans have become parents, and nature names have become more adventurous. Now that it has cracked the Top 1000, Lavender follows in the footsteps of names like Juniper, Sage, and Marigold.

Lettie

This sweet vintage nickname could be short for Scarlett, Violet, Leticia, Loretta... but more and more parents like it enough to put it on the birth certificate as is. Tilly is another diminutive that entered the Top 1000 in 2024.

Marjorie

Marjorie was a Top 20 name in the 1920s, and a century later, she is starting to come back around. This spelling, with spunky "Jo" in the middle, is far more popular than Margery — and is the spelling used by Taylor Swift in a song dedicated to her grandmother. Rebekah is another Swiftie name that entered the Top 1000. Give it a few more years, and we can see Marjorie becoming the new Margo.

Romy

Many name nerds have been crushing on Romy for years, and it looks like its time is finally coming. Romy can be a nickname for longer names like Rosemary and Romana, but also feels complete in itself. It's a great international option: it ranks in the Top 100 in several European countries, and is especially popular in France and Quebec, which puts it in Canada's Top 100 too.

Salome

Like Keziah, Salome — long-neglected in America — has been quietly rising in recent years, as parents seek fresh options to replace well-worn biblical names like Hannah and Abigail. Working in Salome's favor are its ever-relevant meaning ("peace"), and the possibility of Sally as a nickname.

Yusra

Soft, strong, and meaning "ease, prosperity", Yusra is a Top 300 name in England and Wales. After Adhara (which was already in the Top 1000), it was the fastest rising Arabic name in the charts this year.

Cool New Boy Names In The Top 1000

Arden

We've been recommending this unisex Shakespearean place name for decades, and it's finally starting to get the recognition it deserves. After nearly 40 years of leaning more female, this year the balance tipped and slightly more baby boys got this name. Either way, it's a perfect blend of timeless and contemporary style.

Azai

"Ai" is one of the coolest diphthongs around right now, and unlike some names with this ending, Azai isn't a modern invention. It's a Hebrew name meaning "strength". Both Azai and the similar Azaiah leapt up several hundred places to enter the Top 1000.

Bryer

We often see names respelled to look more feminine, like Eliette and Madisyn. Bryer is a rare example of a spelling change that makes it seem more masculine: take the start of Bryson, the end of Tyler, and you almost disguise its origins in the nature name Briar. Bryer was the third-fastest climbing name of 2024.

Campbell

Campbell is one of the most balanced unisex names around. In 2024 it was given to almost equal numbers of baby boys and girls, entering the boys' Top 1000 for the first time, and re-entering for girls. As a fresh last name as first name, with a trendy "Cam" sound and a passing resemblance to Kendall, it's easy to see the appeal — especially if you have Scottish heritage.

Casper

With Cassian, Cassius, Caspian and Castiel in the Top 1000, it was only a matter of time before friendly Casper joined them too. As a long-time favorite with Nameberry readers — and currently the 120th most-viewed name on the site — we know Berries will either be delighted or dismayed that it finally becoming better-known.

Evren

With its gentle sound and cosmic meaning ("universe"), Evren is a Turkish name that crosses cultures easily, and could appeal to non-Turkish parents — helped by its similarity to Evan and Avery. Entourage actor Adrian Grenier and his wife Jordan Roemmele named their son Evren earlier this year, which is likely to make it rise still higher.

Halo

In early 2024, actor Halle Bailey revealed her son's name to be Halo, and the public responded: it almost doubled in use that year. With its combination of spirituality, virtue, and a cool o-ending, Halo was already rising for both sexes, but the celebrity endorsement no doubt accelerated the process.

Rowdy

This rough-and-tumble cowboy name feels ready to cause a stir, like Maverick and Legend, but also has a playful, nickname-ish quality.

Truce

Everyone's talking about Truce, the fastest-rising baby name of the year... and ever. It increased in use by an astonishing 3700%, from 6 boys in 2023 to 227 boys in 2024 (plus 10 girls), placing it at Number 991. At first we wondered if we'd missed a pop culture reference, but it seems to be simply a magic combination of a cool sound — True and Truett are also rising — and a widespread desire for peace. We predicted "safe haven names" would be a trend of the year, but this surpassed all expectations.

Zymir

Pronounced "za-MEER", Zymir is a legit, established name that's cool and travels well across cultures. With roots in Arabic, Hebrew and Albanian, it combines an energetic Z sound with the on-trend "mir" ending. The spelling Zamir is more popular, but we like this elegant alternative.
