River Origin and Meaning

The name River is a boy's name .

River shares the tranquil feeling of all the water names, and seems to have pretty much escaped its past strong association with River Phoenix and his unfortunate fate. Keri Russell and the Taylor Hansons both have sons named River, Natasha Henstridge used it as the middle name of her boy Tristan, and Jason Schwartzman pluralized it for daughter Marlowe Rivers.

Sendak Says:

We named our son River. We were a bit nervous about how people would react, as we have a quite conservative family when it comes to names, but our family overwhelmingly loved it. We often have people tell us how much they like his name.

oliviamcdonald Says:

I love this name so much for a boy. I can’t really see it on a girl but that’s just me. I picture a handsome, rugged and outdoorsy guy.

cheesy-biscuit Says:

I really love River for a boy!! My husband won;t use it though as we holiday at a river :( do you think this would be silly??? I just love it it is in my top 3 favourite names!

headintheclouds Says:

I really like the idea behind River- the whole nature name hippie vibe, and my personal image of an outdoorsy little boy as mentioned by previous commenters, who'll grow up to be a bearded lumbersexual kind of man. The rhythm and sound of River also (pun) flows like water and sounds restful to my ears. I also love the nickname Riv. BUT. As someone who finds certain r sounds tough to pronounce, this name gets taken off the table for me! I have the same problem with Aurora xD Also, I much prefer this name on a boy (though I objectively can see River as unisex), and I just hope that it won't become a "fall to the girls camp" kind of name!

priviledgedpistachios Says:

I love this name so much! (not just 'cause I'm probably the biggest fan of Daniela Ruah) It's so cute and I love it!

RoddyThlayli Says:

I used to go to a co-op thing with a boy named River (as far as I remember, he had a younger brother named Sage and an older sister named Echo) so I thought it was completely masculine. Then I watched Doctor Who, and thought it sounded very feminine. Now I can see it either way. I really like it, and the nickname Riv isn't bad.

Kayte Says:

I agree! I think it sounds much better as a boys name.

Momof2Davisgirls Says:

River is a nice name for boys/men. I like it more as a middle name.

I really love the name for a boy or girl and I can't see this name leaning towards one more than the other. It's a great unisex name! :D

I like that it's a nature name with positive meanings, but I don't know if I would be able to name a child this.

Why is there a celeb craze with this name, anyway? It’s not THAT cool.
