Cosmo Origin and Meaning

The name Cosmo is a boy's name of Greek origin meaning "order, beauty".

We all heard it on "Seinfeld" as the long-concealed first name of Kramer, now some pioneering parents are wondering if this expansive Greek name that seems to embrace the whole cosmos could make a creative and cool choice for their baby.

Cosmo is the name of the Arabian-born patron saint of doctors.

In literature, Baron Cosmo Bradwardine is a character in Sir Walter Scott's novel Waverly and Cosmo Topper is the befuddled banker in Thorne Smith's humorous novel Topper.

In modern times Cosmo has become the short form for Cosmopolitan--both the magazine and the cocktail.

Diaper Bagge Says:

I LOVE this name!

Gabbsgarden Says:

I named my son Cosmo because I love studying and photographing the stars. Everyone loves his name. A few old fashioned people raise their eyebrows but it doesnt bother me. And people make the Seinfeld connection, the Fairly Odd Parents connection, even the BYU mascot one. But again I shrug it off and people move on.

We call him Coz for short or Cozy (pronounced cause-ee) for cute. Hes about 6 months now and people are starting to say how he seems like a Cosmo. I think they are just getting used to it. I wanted a unique name with a lot of meaning. I love it!

Mhollen Says:

My son who is currently 16yo is named Cosmo, but I did give him two >> normal? middle names Donovan Alexander...heh just in case, as he got older he didn't care for his first name. I've asked him over the years if he cared to switch, but not once has he ever had an issue at school or with his friends. And everyone he meets easily remembers his name upon second meeting, which we can't all say that! But I will say I prefer unusual names, and to my understanding it meant Peace and Order, and he being my 2nd child, my first being a true trial, I really needed Peace and Order, and he was the BEST infant anyone could have hoped for, not so much in the teenage years, but I do love him! The only thing I would change would be the Seinfeld connection, lol, I never watched that show, but everyone assumes I got the idea from there, ugh, however I did enjoy the Cosmo Topper films! In parting if you are looking for a memorable, unique name for a boy, that should guarantee a happy baby that lets you sleep through the night, look no further!

My initial reaction to Cosmo was "Why on earth would anyone name a kid that? It sounds so silly." but it's grown on me. I really like it now.

ashbee Says:

I love the meaning of the word. I had no idea it had such a long history of use in Scottish noble families!

amberdaydream Says:

I know Cosima is quite popular on Nameberry. Wonder why Cosmo hasn't followed suit?

Taylor_23 Says:

I would like it too, but like you said, the show "Fairly Odd Parents" makes me think of the dumb acting Character Cosmo in the show straight away. Yet, still adorable for a puppy
