About this list

Old-fashioned names are always in style, but the names considered to be old-fashioned evolve. Once an old-school name becomes too cool for babies, it simply becomes a baby name, rather than an old lady or old man name.

In the late 20th century, Emily was considered an old-fashioned name, until it reached endemic heights for baby girls in the 1990s and 2000s. Names such as Evelyn and Theodore might succumb to a similar fate.

Along with Evelyn and Theodore, other old-fashioned names that rank in the US Top 1000 include Hazel, Oscar, Iris, Otis, Florence, and Ambrose.

Trending old-fashioned names include names with strong G or J sounds, such as Georgina and Marjorie for girls, Gus and Irving for boys. We also expect to hear more nickname names from yesteryear, including Betty and Bonnie, Ward and Wiley.

Our full collection of old-fashioned baby names is here.
