Alexander Origin and Meaning

The name Alexander is a boy's name of Greek origin meaning "defending men".

Alexander is derived from the Greek name Aléxandros, composed of the elements aléxein, meaning “to defend,” and aner, meaning “man.” According to Greek legend, the first Alexander was Paris, who was given the nickname Alexander by the shepherds whose flocks he defended against robbers. He was followed by Alexander the Great, aka Alexander III, who conquered much of Asia.

Alexander has been in the Top 25 since 1991. The noble Alexander has led to the popularity of so many spinoffs, such as Alex, Zander, Xan and Zan — not to mention all the female versions — that it almost feels as if the name world's been Alextrified out. But namers are still attracted to its imposing historic pedigree.

A royal name in Scotland, Alexander is still highly popular there. In Gaelic, the name became Alasdair; in Spain, Alejandro; and in Italy, Alessandro.

Among the many notable Alexanders in history, standouts are Hamilton, Graham Bell, Fleming, Pope and Haig.

Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber's Alexander is known as Sasha.

Xander is a great name on its own too! Love it and much fresher. I'm not a big fan of name Alex and 99% of Alexander's will eventually be called Alex which is my only concern.

Agree! My only issue with this name is the nickname Alex, I don't want my son to be automatically called Alex. I would prefer Alexander or Xander.

I love this name, it's a strong name that fits a little boy or a man. The nickname Alex is horrible and very overused. It almost ruins the name for me, but I love the nickname Alec. The name is subtly different then Alex, but is much more sophisticated, and fresh.

yeah, the nickname ALEX ruins this name for me... But I do like Xander all on it's own

I prefer just Xander... More masculine and strong, somehow.
