About Archie
Archie made global news as the surprise first name of the newborn royal baby, son of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (aka Harry and Meghan) back in 2019. Already a popular choice in England, Wales, and Scotland, where it has featured in the Top 100 since the 2000s, and the Top 20 since the the 2010s, Archie has begun to recover its status in the US, after its fall from grace, thanks to the bigoted character, Archie Bunker of All in the Family and its spin off.
Archie for boys#301 US
Back in the US Top 1000 since 2018, it has since jumped up to the #301 mark in a recent year, when it ranked alongside other retro choices like Sonny and Otto. Similar in sound to contemporary Archer, it may well continue to climb, leaving its long form, Archibald behind.
Meaning "truly brave" from Archibald, it could additionally meaning "archer, bowman", or even "master counsel" from truly unexpected Archimedes (used for 14 boys in 2025).
Archie can be a female nickname name too: Archie Panjabi, who won an Emmy for her role as Kalinda Sharma in The Good Wife in 2010, was born Archana, meaning "honoring, praising" in Sanskrit.
Archie for girls#15171 US
Cosy but cool, Archie has been a favorite nickname for boys in the UK since the 2000s. More recently, it re-entered the US Top 1000 after a 30 year absence and saw a big rise after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle chose it for their son in 2019. As a girl name, it has been occasionally used, albeit rarely.
With options like Stevie, Billie, and Scottie on this rise, however, this vintage nickname may appeal to some parents thanks to its softer sounds and similarities to the likes of Marcy, Ari, Darcy, and Charlie.
The TV medical drama BBC Casualty featured a female character called Archie, played by Genesis Lynea. When a patient made a disparaging comment on her name, she shrugged it off, explaining she'd chosen it for herself. There's also actress Archie Panjabi, who was born Archana ("honoring, praising" from Sanskrit).
Pronounced AR-chee.
As of October 2026, Archie ranked #301 in US births in 2025 SSA, peaked at #79 in 1890, Nameberry popularity #123.
