About Logan
According to exclusive Nameberry data, Logan is officially the Number 1 gender-neutral name in the US, but that statistic is somewhat misleading given that nearly 90 percent of the baby Logans born in 2024 were boys.
Logan started climbing in the mid-70s and shot up to the Top 5 for boys in 2017. Now, Logan's popularity has settled back down to the boys' Top 50 in the US and the Top 100 in other English-speaking countries.
The mutant character Wolverine, known as Logan, based on the X-Men comics and played by Hugh Jackman on film, has had a considerable impact on the name. There were also attractive guys named Logan on Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls, though Succession patriarch Logan Roy may have given the name a harder edge.
Logan originated as a Scottish surname which was derived from a place of that name in Ayrshire. The place name came from lagan, a Scottish Gaelic diminutive of lag, meaning "hollow." Alternate spellings include Logon, Logen, and Logyn, which is more common among girls.
Logan is used for girls less often now than it was in the mid-nineties. A little over ten percent of the baby Logans today are female, down from about 15 percent in 1995.
Pronounced LO-gun.
As of October 2026, Logan ranked #53 in US births in 2025 SSA, peaked at #5 in 2017, Nameberry popularity #128.
Editor's take: The name Logan is a boy's name of Scottish origin meaning "small hollow".
