Gender: Female Meaning of Ruby: "deep red precious stone" Origin of Ruby: Latin Ruby's Popularity in 2019: #66

Ruby Origin and Meaning

The name Ruby is a girl's name of Latin origin meaning "deep red precious stone".

Ruby, vibrant red, sassy and sultry, has definitely outshone the other revived vintage gem names, with its sparkling resume of cultural references.

Ruby is an early rock classic -- think the Rolling Stones hit "Ruby Tuesday" --and other songs like "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love from Me." She's appeared in such works as Cold Mountain and been associated with performers like Ruby Keeler (born Ethel) and Ruby Dee. Chosen by Tobey Maguire and a number of other celebs, Ruby makes a cool yet warm choice.

For the past few years, Ruby has been a huge hit across the English-speaking world: right now she's popular in Australia, in England and Wales, and in Ireland. Her highest point in the US was from 1900 to 1936, when she was in the Top 50--but she could surpass that number if enthusiasm for her continues to grow.

Another plus: Ruby is one of those vintage baby names that feels totally modern.

rubyj Says:

My name! I often get the nickname Rubes.

RubyAlexandria Says:

As a Ruby myself, I can honestly say I wouldn't change my name for anything. I hated it growing up, it sounded like a baby's name to me. But I've grown to love, and appreciate it, and it will provide your baby with so many opportunities! I have only ever met one other person with my name, but they spelled it "Rubi". Overall, you can't go wrong with Ruby, your baby will get many compliments on this name.

tori101 Says:

Years ago I said I disliked Ruby how time changes your opinion because I’m now newly pregnant and if I am blessed with a healthy pregnancy & a girl this is actually a massive contender now. Honestly adore Ruby I’m doing this pregnancy by myself which means I have so much more creativity when it comes to names but I keep being drawn to sweet little Ruby. Before becoming pregnant I wanted something obscure, daring & different but now I want a name that is reliable and endearing. To me Ruby is that I also love that it subtly honours my sister who was born in July and the middle names most likely will be Elizabeth Laura. So in love with Ruby ❤️❤️

Eliza1303 Says:

I don’t really like this name too much. I feel like it’s very popular and a little too much but I don’t really mind it on other people. I ,personally, just wouldn’t name any of my future children this.

I like Ruby but like Lucy I'm unsure that it ages well...It would honor my Grandmither who was born in July!

eveyalecia Says:

I love Ruby-- like others have said, it's both pretty and spunky. The vintage nature of it makes it even better.

IvyTheRoserade Says:

Ruby is such a pretty name!!

TheHumanCanvas Says:

I once had a dream, where I had a daughter whose name was Ruby.

ruby(ugh) Says:

hi, my name is Ruby. I'm just here to say, that if you want your daughter to have a very original name then Ruby may not be the best choice. I have lived my whole life with other Ruby's popping up all over the place. I know at least 7 other Ruby's, and eventually the popularity of the name gets a bit annoying. But, though there are several of us, I do really like the name. I think that if you have an interesting middle name to go along with Ruby, then it would be better. Just be wary of the amount of Ruby's around if you are planning on naming your kid it. (though I do very much like my name, I think it's very nice, it is just annoying that SO MANY PEOPLE have it as well), from a Ruby in distress. (p.s. this notice is especially important for if you live in New Zealand)

headintheclouds Says:

Ruby is a nice classic, feminine and spunky short and sweet two-syllable name. I personally don't quite like it- there's something about the Ru- and -by sound combined together that sounds harsh and coarse to me. But I'm glad to see Ruby in the vintage name-revival group and becoming popular now, since it's definitely nicer than some of the other top-charting baby names!

tori101 Says:

Yay I'm glad someone agrees with me : )

RoddyThlayli Says:

That's how it sounds to me, also.

babymagic Says:

Ruby hits that sweet spot between friendly and lovable on the one hand and elegant and feminine on the other.

jopendle Says:

Shortly after our Ruby was born, we met a little girl at the park named Opal. :) It was so cute.

Emily Basford Gebhart Says:

We named our daughter Ruby Rebecca born 8/2014. We always get compliments on the name as well as comments that people don't know any others with that name. We love it!

tracyseymour1 Says:

No, not at all... I like it, because it is two "color" names. Very unique!

tracyseymour1 Says:

My grandma's name was Ruby, so I've always liked this name, and I love the gemstone. In fact, my dog's name is Ruby Sweetheart... (The name of Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer's daughter.) :)

rachelbrein Says:

My youngest daughter born in 2006 is named Ruby. I obviously love this name! It fits her perfectly!

ThistleThorn Says:

This is such a pretty name, but I've never met anyone named Ruby.

indiefendi2 Says:

I'm falling in love with this name but my mom thinks it's old. Guess I'll keep Emerald on file.

jenileigh Says:

I like may or mae for a middle name. Thank you so much I'm glad u like it ! I love color names but its contradicting with the last name brown...I liked olive too but olive brown , yuck

Lunessence Says:

I don't think Ruby Brown sounds awful at all. Pairing Ruby's middle name with something that sounds French-esque or at least two syllables would sound really nice.

Ruby Jonelle Brown
Ruby Michelle Brown
Ruby Elise Brown
Ruby Sophia Brown
Ruby Nicole Brown

Keep in mind, though, that both Ruby and Brown are colors so there's definitely going to be possible teasing of that in her life. It's practically impossible to try to prevent any kind of teasing with any name. My name is Kristi and I was called Crusty the Clown when I was a kid because The Simpsons was growing in popularity. Point being: Someone will find a way to make fun of ANY name. But I honestly think Ruby Brown is really pretty. Could always use Ruby as a middle name, too!

jenileigh Says:

Our last name is Brown...... but ruby is my favorite name...... does ruby brown sound awful? Opinions please

Rubyknipe Says:

This is a gorgeous name. Also my name! Very spunky and Vintage

Guest Says:

I see the cool factor of it but it reminds me of an old lady. Probably because my old math teacher's name is Ruby and she's middle aged. I want to like this! But I'm sticking with Scarlett or Emerald, or even Sapphire.

amberdaydream Says:

In one of my classes there are two girls called Ruby and two girls called Amber (I'm one of them). We're all about precious stones in Britain!

tori101 Says:

Sorry for the negativity after so much positivity surrounding this name. I generally dislike Ruby. I feel Ruby has a harsh quality to the name and just doesn't sound attractive.

Zoey_Artemisia Says:

I know right? I just think they have waaaay to much free time.

madmaddie Says:

Yeah, I know, but I couldn't help it...

Guest Says:

don't feed trolls, it gives them the energy to keep irritating everyone.

madmaddie Says:

This is a baby name site, sicko.

Ginegy Says:

My best friend as a child's name was Ruby and we all called her Rue

Athena_hime15 Says:

Ruby is an absolutely gorgeous name.

catcher5 Says:

We are seriously considering this for our baby girl due in Dec. I love this name, along with it's nn Rue. The only down-side is that where I live it was the #14 name in 2013. I already know of two baby Ruby's, and a friend of mine, who is due in Oct., said she was considering it for her little girl as well.

kittykate928 Says:

One of the only gem names I like.

Renee5322 Says:

I Recently fell in love with this name. It's so spunky! Great for a July baby!

ambg Says:

If only my future kid had a higher likelihood of being redheaded - this would be a darling name.

MissPix Says:

Classic, spunky and sweet. I love Ruby.
