About Isla
Isla is a hit name throughout the English-speaking world but hasn't found the same popularity in other western countries, perhaps because its spelling and pronunciation don't make sense for those whose native language is not English. Think island without the final two letters.
Adding to the confusion, the name is a twin of the Spanish word for island, which is pronounced EES-la. Isla is part of a trend for simple, old-fashioned girls’ names that start and end with a vowel: Ava, Ada, Ella, Emma, Eva, Ida, Ivy.
Red-haired actress Isla Fisher, married to Sacha Baron Cohen, propelled the name to stardom. Isla Black Hitchens is a Harry Potter character; Queen Elizabeth has a great-granddaughter named Isla Elizabeth Phillips.
Some other similar names that are not as trendy as Isla: Islay and Ailsa.
Isla is also given to boys, where it ranks #10084 in the US.
Pronounced IZ-lah.
As of October 2026, Isla ranked #28 in US births in 2025 SSA, Nameberry popularity #3.
