Gender: Female Meaning of Harley: "the long field" Origin of Harley: English Harley's Popularity in 2018: #225

Harley Origin and Meaning

The name Harley is a girl's name of English origin meaning "the long field".

Once a macho biker name, Harley is now showing its softer side. In the UK, Harley is still much more male.

Along with Harper and Hadley, we think it will climb even further. In England, it's associated with Harley Street, home to some of London's most prominent medical specialists.

Harley came over to the girls' side in 1991, long after being the name of the Joker's female assistant in the Batman universe, Harley Quinn, "born" Harleen Quinsel. DC Comics movie Suicide Squad from 2016 was probably part of the reason for the slight bump in the number of girls named Harley. Harley Cooper was a character who was introduced on the soap The Guiding Light in 1987—that Harley was named after her father's favorite motorcycle.

I'm sure this name will soar in popularity due to Suicide Squad. I'm starting to like spunky Harley, it's more distinctive than Haley or Hallie

How come the female version has a different meaning from the male one? Do they have different origins? I just assumed the girls name came from the boys.

Apparently I really liked this name when I was younger. Looking back, a lot of the stories I wrote then had a girl named Harley as a character I've grown tired of the name since then, but it might feel fresh again to me soon..

I knew a Harley too, when it was fairly uncommon. All I can think of is the motorcycle :(

oiseau Says:

Maybe because of biker gangs? I have no idea. Where I live, Harley is pretty common.

Guest Says:

I only knew one Harley, I went to summer camp with her back in like 2005 or so. Even then people thought her name had a negative connotation. Is it because it sounds close to "harlot"? Or is it because of the motorcycle connection? I don't get it.

NamesNeeded Says:

Not really my cup of tea, and many people think it is horrible for a girl, but the only Harleys I've ever known were girls. Except for a male dog.

ambg has given a ridiculous response, theres nothing wrong with the name Harley..

ambg Says:

It just reminds me of Harley Quinn from Batman. She's not a good person to name your kid after. Or the motorcycles from Harley Davidson, which are kind of known for being the cheesiest, overly branded motorcycles out there.
