About Naomi
A familiar name with a unique look and sound about it, Naomi combines a gentle cadence with classic strength. It was once a primarily Jewish name from the Old Testament, borne by the mother-in-law of Ruth, symbolically given to girls on Shavuot (a holiday held around the wheat harvest) when the story of Ruth is read in the synagogue.
Meaning "pleasantness" from the Hebrew naʿam, it wasn't used in the English speaking world until the 17th century when Puritans revived Old Testament names. Now, it is used globally, charting in Belgium, England and Wales, Poland, France, and The Netherlands. In Israel and the US meanwhile, it recently ranked as a Top 50 choice.
Model Naomi Campbell and actress Naomi Watts have helped popularize the name while other namesakes are singer Naomi Judd, feminist writer Naomi Wolf and actresses Naomi Ackie and Naomi Scott.
Pronounced as nay-O-mee or sometimes as nie-O-mee, more than 4600 girls were given the name in the US in a recent year. There are also the stylish international variants to consider: French Noemie, Italian Noemi, and Portuguese Noemia.
Naomi coincides with a Japanese name with completely separate roots, meaning "straight, direct + beautiful", though this may vary depending on the kanji used. In this case NA-O-MEE would be the pronunciation, and a notable bearer is tennis player Naomi Osaka.
Naomi is also given to boys, where it ranks #13310 in the US.
Pronounced nay-OH-mee.
As of October 2026, Naomi ranked #47 in US births in 2025 SSA, peaked at #44 in 2023, Nameberry popularity #40.
