Marion
About Marion
An underused classic that has proved surprisingly unisex over the last few decades, being given to roughly the same number of baby girls and boys in the US from the 1970s to the 2000s. For a girl, Marion has a sturdy old-fashioned charm.
The meaning of Marie is uncertain, but theories include "drop of the sea" (from Hebrew roots mar "drop" and yam "sea"); "bitter" (from Hebrew marah "bitterness"); and "beloved" (from the Egyptian root mr).
As of October 2026, Marion ranked #2044 in US births in 2025 SSA, peaked at #42 in 1922, Nameberry popularity #589.
Editor's take: The name Marion is a girl's name meaning "drop of the sea, bitter, or beloved".
