Gender: Male Meaning of Bodhi: "awakening, enlightenment" Origin of Bodhi: Sanskrit Bodhi's Popularity in 2018: #314

Bodhi Origin and Meaning

The name Bodhi is a boy's name of Sanskrit origin meaning "awakening, enlightenment".

Bodhi is a Sanskrit name translated as "enlightenment" or "awakening" which relates to a Buddhist concept, wherein Bodhi is synonymous with the state of nirvana, being freed from hate, greed and ego. The Bodhi tree is a large fig tree under which the founder of Buddhism received enlightenment. Spelling variations include Bodie and Bode.

Bodhi has recently been appearing as a baby name in the American celebrisphere, first heard via Bodhi Elfman, husband of Jenna. Since then it has been used by four celebrity couples as the first name for their sons, and celebrity chef Tom Colicchio as the middle name for his boy, Luka. Carly Simon and James Taylor have a grandson named Bodhi. And who remembers that it was the name of the Patrick Swayze character in the 1991 film "Point Break"?

As opposed to some other religious and spiritual names, Bodhi has an upbeat, friendly feel, similar to that of Brody and Cody.

Pop Culture References for the name Bodhi

Ellaspivey Says:

We should really have the website list this as unisex, as I’ve met a few female Bodhi’s

z_intercept Says:

That's kind of the rub though, how many of these celebs are practicing buddhists? Effectively none. Buddhism is just a trendy reference to the Urban Outfitters crowd, to be used and discarded with other ~multicultural~ trends.

clairels Says:

I don't understand why you like Brody but think Bodhi is "awful." They are extremely similar and Bodhi has a much more positive meaning.

clairels Says:

There are Buddhists of all races around the world. I think if you're Buddhist, you should have a right to use this name.

clairels Says:

Yes. It's really a unisex name, anyway.

indiefendi2 Says:

With yet another celebrity couple naming their daughter Bodhi is it time for a female page to it?

Daiseymae Says:

I love the middle name.

Daiseymae Says:

I would too. Who cares if other people have it? This is a really nice name.

Stella2007 Says:

That's so beautiful.

chechechelss Says:

Bodhi is the name of a vampire in a game I used to be obsessed with. I really liked this name for a girl until I started hearing it everywhere...
Another couple of girls names I liked in that game were Imoen (I prefer this to Imogen), Viconia and Jaheira.

JossieChris Says:

We have decided on Bodhi for our next baby. We are considering it for a girl as well. We like the Scandinavian meaning of "shelter" but prefer the popular Bodhi spelling for pronunciation and style. I like that it has "hi" in the name giving it a friendly feel. I don't feel I need to be a particular religion to enjoy it either. Fun to say with nn Bo and ties to Point Break, my husbands go to dude flick.

cmariac Says:

Now that this is a "Star Wars" name, I expect we'll see this name more?

FantasyandPrayer Says:

I like it but fear it is becoming too popular, but I think I'd still consider it for a middle name. It doesn't seem as popular here as it is in the US so that's something I suppose.

Wittyusername103 Says:

That's my thinking I just wanted to check.

thorn144 Says:

I think it is, but many english-speaking countries are so desensitized to cultural appropriation I don't think they think anything of this name. To me, this would be like naming your non-poc child Navajo or Zimbabwe, I just don't think it's respectful.

Wittyusername103 Says:

So this 100% not offensive?

Wittyusername103 Says:

Who cares? If you like it use it. As long as you are indeed buddhist. Why not?

Tara Charkowick-Wellman Says:

My son was delivered at 22 weeks due to a severe genetic disorder. We named him Bodhi because he is free from the pain and suffering he would have endured here on earth. This name is beautiful and I love that it was so fitting for our little sleeping baby.

-EagleEyes- Says:

Never was really a fan of this name, but met a little Bodhi last weekend and it fit him so well! It's grown on me a lot since then, and feels lively and happy to me.

rubylayla Says:

I'm not sure why this name is becoming more popular. It is quite simply, AWFUL! If you like Bodhi (which looks like it's pronounced Body), consider the much cooler Brody instead!

Grey_B Says:

My 2 year old daughter name is Bodhi Christiana

caetano Says:

caetano Says:

exactly. Its gorgeous imo.

Hailey Says:

How is this pronounced? BO-dee?

cabosanmucus Says:

I really want to like this name because it has a great connotation and I love learning about Buddhism but good golly it's just really ugly to me. :(

Michaela Says:

And 'booty' depending on how people mispronounce it :/

headintheclouds Says:

Bodhi is one of the "trendy" hipster names I see from time to time on Nameberry that I've never really gotten behind. To me, this is a name that parents pick because it sounds cool+ exotic, and the ties to Buddhist spiritualism makes Bodhi sound more attractive, whether or not they actually know more about/ have any connection to the concept behind it. I can see how the sound would be appealing though.

oliviamcdonald Says:

I like this name and so does my mum, which is a miracle! It is like Brody but with a better meaning (Brody means ditch). I think it could be used on a girl too, just like Brodie.

oliviamcdonald Says:

That's where I first heard it too! But I've loved it ever since, he was a sweet boy and it suited him!

JesseNicole Says:

Adorable name, but I keep seeing "Body". I also love the meaning behind it. Nice name, but I don't know if I'd use it.

celly Says:

This is my son's middle name. My husband and I kept switching back and forth from having this be his first name to his middle name. In the end we decided on Felix Bodhi and it works!

Netta5187 Says:

I love this name! Especially since I was raised Buddhist. If only celebs would stay away from it...

strawberrydino Says:

Erm I first heard this name off of a documentary about two siblings with severe symptoms of autism and schizophrenia. I might've liked the name if it wasn't for that association ..

puzzlesarecool Says:

Bodhi reminds me of the word 'body'

MaryKathryn Says:

This has always and forever will be one of my favorite boys name and now that TWO celebrities have welcomed babies within the same week and both named Bodhi, I am perturbed. I fear I am losing my unique boy name. So long sweet Bodhi!
