Gender: Female Meaning of Nova: "new" Origin of Nova: Latin Nova's Popularity in 2019: #51

Nova Origin and Meaning

The name Nova is a girl's name of Latin origin meaning "new".

Nova is a name that has the feel of both newness, from his meaning, and great energy from being an astronomical term for a star that suddenly increases in brightness, then fades.

Nova had some reasonable degree of popularity at the turn of the last century and into the early 1930's and is now making a comeback. Nova Pilbeam, the star of one of Hitchcock's early British films, had family ties to Nova Scotia.

Other ties: the long-running science TV show and the finest kind of lox.

To me, it's almost more of a reason to want to use it. When a black hole happens, it sucks light into it. Yes, it keeps it there and the light is never seen, but it has light in it.

Karbear Says:

This is my great grandma name born 1915! Can't believe how popular it's getting now

Tora Says:

Perhaps some people will think this is a stretch, but I see a beautiful metaphorical meaning with this name;
The earth has been around for billions of years, and probably billions more, long after humans have gone. In the grand scheme of things, our life times are literally just a brief flash in time. While some people merely exist or contribute little, others make the world a better, brighter place in the time that they're here. Their lives increase the brightness and beauty of the world and when they eventually leave it won't be the same again. That's what the name Nova means to me.
I hope that makes sense! Lol.

Paris Smith Says:

a star showing a sudden large increase in brightness and then slowly returning to its original state over a few months.'

ArthurianDreams Says:

A nova is a sudden brightness in stars. It can happen to dwarf stars when another star near them becomes a red giant, and some of the hydrogen of the growing red giant is pulled near the dwarf star. This causes a bright explosion on the planet. It briefly makes the star one of the brightest objects in the galaxy. The nova meaning isn't negative at all. Novae make older "dimmer" stars shine as bright as young ones. They are beautiful occurrences, so don't let that responder discourage you from the name :)

Smollie Says:

I really loved this name but then someone on a different online forum had this response to it: "You do realize when a star goes Nova that's when it dies? And then it leaves a black hole? That's a terrible meaning!"

Now I'm unsure whether to use it :/

laurelrobyn Says:

My daughter is named Nova and it's absolutely perfect! She is bright, energetic, creative, and friendly. She's my bright star. And I've only gotten positive reactions (all of which seemed totally genuine). Funny enough, she has a friend at preschool named Novalee. Never thought we would have the issue of two Nova's in class! But it's cute, they think it's such a cool thing.

I actually really like this name, very soft and pretty. People might give some weird looks, but it's not something completely out there or embarrassing.
