Gender: Female Meaning of Lucy: "light" Origin of Lucy: English, variation of Lucia Lucy's Popularity in 2019: #48

Lucy Origin and Meaning

The name Lucy is a girl's name of English, Latin origin meaning "light".

Lucy is the English form of the Roman Lucia, which derives from the Latin word "lux" meaning "light." Lucy and Lucia were at one time given to girls born at dawn. Lucy can alternatively be spelled Luci or Lucie.

Lucy was fashionable first in England and Wales but now is popular in the US as well. That's due to its attractiveness on so many levels: Lucy is both saucy and solid, a saint's name and heroine of several great novels, and is associated with characters as diverse as the bossy Lucy in Peanuts, the psychedelic "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," and the madcap I Love Lucy.

Lucy Lockit was featured in John Gay's comic opera The Beggar's Opera; Lucy Snowe is a main character in Charlotte Brontë's novel Villette.

Currently, Lucy Liu has imparted a new strength to the name; Lucy Stone was an important American activist. Lucy is one of the most popular girls' names starting with L.

lucysj Says:

My name is literally Lucy and my sister's name is Molly. I guess our parents love childish names

ivy194 Says:

Yes she's my favourite character in the whole series!!!!!!!!

ivy194 Says:

I adore this name.

Isabella_188 Says:

That's why I would rather use Lucille, and Lucy as a nn, instead of Lucy by itself.

mommytomany Says:

There's an Aunt Lucy in my family tree. She was my great-grandmother's half sister. Apparently she was quite a character. There's a rural highway named after her.

acf876 Says:

I love the name Lucy and am considering the name Lucy Charlotte if my current baby is a girl (12w pregnant). I just think it's adorable. It definitely has that cutesy babyish aspect like Emma does but I don't like the name Emma. I just think this is such a good name. It also plays off of my and my first daughters middle name Claire.

cheesy-biscuit Says:

I wish this name wasn't so popular!

letmein Says:

I used to like this name but, not anymore.

Looooovenames Says:

All I hear is the word Loose. Do not like this name, but it is getting very popular.

bordercollie Says:

I do like Lucy, but I've always found it quite insubstantial and cutesy. It's sweet and has a lovely meaning, but there's something flimsy and childish about it that I can't seem to overcome. It probably doesn't help how many double names like Lucy-Mae or Lucy-Rose I've heard, all of which I find very cutesy. I far prefer Lucia, Lucille, and Lucienne, which sound more grown up in my opinion.

kmdharrington Says:

Both of the Lucys that I know actually have curly hair.

Myanover Says:

I like this name a lot , it means light. My sisters name,Lilah means night in hebrew

Sillysarahlily Says:

I played a character in a short film called Lucy, The Lucy I played was like the peanuts character, not very nice and in the way put me off the name

Fluffykitten101 Says:

I can imagine a Lucy as a little girl with long curly light brown hair in pigtails and reading a book by a willow tree on a sunny day! It's such a cute name, don't you think?

paulapuddephatt Says:

Dalmatians101 Says:

I prefer the spelling Lucie.

I like this name a lot but it feels like it won't suit a grown woman well...

hermioneameliastyles Says:

Thanks to the show I Love Lucy, Lucy has skyrocketed as a name. I think this name has a lot of potential for a little girl or an adult. Also with the character Lucy from the Peanuts I've fallen in love with this name. This is number 4 on my favorite names list.

Jazzy7 Says:

I like this name as a middle name. I love it with Anastasia, Anastasia Lucy.

Impwood Says:

I love the name Lucy. It's a beautiful, sweet classic, and I like it as it is, not short for Lucinda or Lucille.

Some names we like, others just don't do it for us. However, professional should be taken seriously with their work, not because of their name. I really appreciate the honesty in your comment though.

scblovesnames Says:

I love this name but Lucia would be the formal name, out of all of them it's the one I like the most.

kpearl8 Says:

I love Lucy but wish there was a more formal version that I liked. Lucia, Lucinda, and Lucretia just don't do it for me. Any other suggestions?

ThistleThorn Says:

bearcub27 Says:

I love Lucy! It has quickly risen up to the top name for a future girl on my list. It's a name that is so very classic and seems very classy to me. Plus, it sounds great with one-syllable middle names all the way up to four-syllable middles. A must for a future daughter :D

Catastroffy Says:

Yes! Lucy Pevensie is the perfect namesake.

Caroline Says:

I love this name!! Queen Lucy the Valiant of Narnia!! Beautiful!!

That Creepy Stalker Named Tess Says:

this is my dog's name :)

Lucy-Mae Says:

My name is Lucy-Mae and honestly, I used to wish it was just Lucy, but now I love it. It's true, Lucy sounds childish, which is why I'm so glad I'm called Lucy-Mae. Adding the Mae makes it seem more mature, I gues :)

vintageluvs Says:

I used to love this name, but now I love the longer forms like Lucinda, Lucienne, etc. I also think Lucy is a beautiful nickname for Lucretia.

janeseemore Says:

This is one of those names I feel like I SHOULD love, but just don't. It just feels perpetually childish, much like Molly I guess. I have no idea why I can't seem to see it as a "grown up" name, since I've known many adult, professional Lucy's. I'll admit I've always had a tough time taking them seriously. Plus, all I seem to hear is LOOSE-ee :(

EryGasai Says:

This is my all-time favourite girl name. I wish I was named Lucy!

LucyNaomi Says:

My name is Lucy and I am liking it more and more. Only problem is that people generally call you by your name when you're in trouble/when they're angry at you, so it does carry a rather negative connotation in that sense. Then again, that's true for any name.

faithnamer Says:

I like this name! I also love the meaning!

Lucy Henderson Says:

I am called Lucy but disliked the name. Due to this I now like it more!!!

Aurra Says:

I changed my name to this. I absolutely love it! Classic, timeless and beautiful, it will be perfect on any little girl.
