Peridot Origin and Meaning

The name Peridot is a girl's name of Arabic origin meaning "a green gemstone".

Peridot is the gem of the month of August, a vibrant green mineral, said to be good for helping people put the past behind them, and an interesting, undiscovered jewel name. It was regarded in ancient times as the symbol of the sun.

Peridots figure in the mythologies of several cultures, including the ancient Egyptian and Roman. They are highly valued in Hawaii, where it is believed that they are the tears of the volcano goddess Pele.

If you want a truly original gem name, you might consider this instead of Opal or Ruby.

Love this name! The obvious "Perry" nickname makes it gives it extra points in my book.

I have a very, very, very slight reading disorder, so sometimes I tend to switch letters around. When I first read this name I thought it said "period". And that immediately made it unappealing.

It's my gemstone, and I've always pronounced it pear-ih-dot. But just recently I heard someone pronounce it as pear-ih-doe. According to Merriam-Webster it is pronounced pear-ih-dot in English, but pear-ee-doe in the original French. So, either pronunciation is fine, really.

Beautiful name, and gemstone. Peri would make a cute nickname, and I love that it is so unusual, compared to other gemstone names.

The gem is pronounced peh-ree-doe. I've never heard it any other way.

Is this always pronounced Peh-ree-doe, like it says? I ask because there's a song by Joni Mitchell where she pronounces it peh-ree-DOT, and that's what I always thought it was until recently.
