Gender: Female Origin of January: Latin, Named for Janus, Roman god of doorways

January Origin and Meaning

The name January is a girl's name .

Thanks to two cultural influences, January has joined March, April, June and August as a plausible month name.

The first was a character named January Wayne in a bestselling 1973 Jacqueline Susann novel, Once is Not Enough, which was later made into a movie. Then, five years later, the mother-to-be of January Jones--future Mad Men star-- was inspired by that character to give the name to her baby daughter, as did enough other parents in 1978 to bring January to Number 639 on the list.

So if you're looking for a cool namesake for an aunt Janet or Janice, January might be the perfect alternative. January, along with Snow and Frost, are also perfect names for winter babies.

This is one of my daughters name... January Jane. We call her Jani or JJ, and she loves it. When she was born, everybody was surprised when we told them her name. Even the nurses were surprised! It's uncommon, but all my kids think it's adorable. January is now eight, and when we introduce her people are still surprised! Totally recommend :D

I don't like this name ever since I saw a documentary about a girl named January. The nickname Jannie rubs me the wrong way.

January, April, May, June, and August are the only month names I would consider using as a name.

Another month name I really like on either gender -- nicknames could be Jan, Jane, Jerry, Nary or even Ju.

Jan seems like a good nickname to me. It sounds sorta like "Jen" and sounds like a real name. I think it works quite nicely as even a full name. But I would probably lengthen the name on the birth certificate to Janet or January. Or you could just go with the nickname Jen for January.

Or South America and Sub-saharan Africa. I guess it'd be like naming them June hahaha 😝

I think this should be a boy's name. It seems decidedly masculine to me.

You could still use it. But be ready for people to constantly ask you if your child was born in January.
