Gender: Male Meaning of Ignatius: "fiery" Origin of Ignatius: Latin

Ignatius Origin and Meaning

The name Ignatius is a boy's name of Latin origin meaning "fiery".

Ignatius? Good gracious! This is a name making a truly surprising return, sparked by its selection by not one but two celebrities--Cate Blanchett and Julianne Nicholson.

Ignatius, the name of several saints including the founder of the Catholic Jesuit order, was considered more apt to be borne by churches and schools than babies in the recent past, though it was not unusual from the late nineteenth century to 1930; it ranked as high as Number 602 in 1913.

The nickname IGGY definitely brings Ignatius down to earth. But if you find Ignatius appealing yet can't quite go all the way, you might want to consider Inigo.

Ignatius is the middle name of Percy Weasley in the Harry Potter books, and is a major character in John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces.

My intro to this name was the kid from the holiday special "The Year Without a Santa Claus." The Ig sound is a bit rough, but I love the "natius". Iggy as a nickname... not sure how I feel, but I think it would work on a little kid for sure.

Ruanne Says:

Nash would be a cool nickname for this one.

vintagesparkle Says:

I'm surprised no reference to Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty! One of my son's (and my) favorite books :)

Loving Ace and Nat as nns, did NOT know about them!

Ruanne Says:

I think that's a plus. ;)

The only thing I don't like about Ignatius, one of the nicknames is Nacho.....

Your sons have such cool names

My 3rd is Ignatius. I wasn't sold on it with our second (ended up naming him Casimir), but it grew on me over time and my husband eventually convinced me it was perfect. It's a family name on his side which is a big plus for me and I love having Iggy! It works for a toddler. Not sure he'll carry the nn forever. But for now it works and he has lots of options!

katinka Says:

This is a new love of mine. I love its awesome meaning, its clunky, regal sound and the nicknames Iggy, Nat and Ace (as suggested by another commenter). I wish I were brave enough to use it!

headintheclouds Says:

Ignatius has been on my favorites list for a long time. It just sounds regal and strong, and hits the naming sweet spot for me, being a three-syllable not-too-common name with roots and a nice meaning. I love the nicknames Iggy or Nate, or just the full Ignatius. If it seems too elaborate for a first name, it's wonderful in the middle spot as well. I particularly like Dylan Ignatius.

adelinejane Says:

I'm considering this name for one of my twins. I just don't like the nn Iggy

malloree Says:

I love this name!!!! Ace does seem like an adorable nickname

lynneinlove Says:

My boyfriend loves this name! I was unsure at first, as its a little "out there" for me, but using the nickname Nate brings it more mainstream (in case a child doesn't like having such an unusual name)

She named herself after her dog for crying out loud

Iggy Azalea will be nothing in two years. Iggy has been around for ages.

AldabellaxWulfe Says:

1. Iggy is undoubtedly male. So whether or not one associates it with the singer is irrelivant.
2. The singer in question is a product of the industry and likely won't last much longer before she's replaced by a younger, newer model. So worrying about Iggy being associated with her is also not a real issue.

Having said all that, I love Ignatius. Dusty is cool in my opinion, and it certainly has far more character to it than a vast majority of the more popular boy names today. Although I will admit that I'm not keen on the nickname Iggy - it's too modern sounding.

Guest Says:

A little dusty for me. Isn't Iggy too reminiscent of Azalea?

indiefendi2 Says:

On my guilty pleasure list! Clunky but cool. :P

I've always liked the nickname Ace for Ignatius. It's a very unique name though

Once met a kid called Nation Ignatius.. That didn't workfor me.

tintri Says:

Ignatius is intense and interesting. The meaning is stunning. We are strongly considering it if we have another boy.

mabespark Says:

Woah. Very interesting and strong, but it might be too much for a little boy to carry. IDK, though, maybe it's just me. The nn Iggy certainly does bring it back down to earth.
