Gianna
Gianna Origin and Meaning
The Italian Gianna undoubtedly owes much of its popularity in the US to its status as an honor name for John. Before the importation of Gianna, there was no truly workable feminine form of John, so Gianna found widespread favor among American parents with Italian roots and far beyond.
Gianna originated as the feminine form of Gianni, the Italian form of Johnny, a diminutive for Giovanni or John. The root name among these is the Hebrew name Yochanen, meaning "God is gracious." The Italian long form of Gianna is Giovanna, and common nicknames include Gia and Gigi.
This Italian classic entered the U.S. list in 1989, breaking into the Top 100 in 2006. Also on the U.S. list are Giovanna, Giana and short-form Gia, which was used by Matt Damon and Mario Lopez.
