Carlo Origin and Meaning
An energetic and friendly Italian classic, Carlo is popular in its native Italy, but also familiar across Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, France, and Brazil. A variation of the regal French and English classic Charles, it is ultimately derived from the Latin Carolus and the Germanic Karl, meaning "free man".
In recent years, Carlo has seen renewed interest in the US, returning to the Top 1000 for the first time in over a decade. Given to more than 250 boy in the latest count, coming years may see attract more attention, after it become a modern saint's name in 2025.
British-Italian teenager Carlo Acutis was canonized as the first millennial saint by Pope Leo XIV, after two miracles attributed to him were confirmed. During his life, he was known for using his computer programming skills to promote Catholic devotion and has since been called the "Patron Saint of the Internet".
Other notable Carlos include footballer manager Carlo Ancelotti, writer of The Adventures of Pinocchio, Carlo Collodi, Olympic skier Carlo Janka, and father of Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte, Carlo Buonaparte, just to name a few.
