Is It True? Sophia, Jacob New #1s!
Nameberry exclusive! Sophia and Jacob are the new Number 1 names, according to the headline of a press release posted briefly on the Social Security website and just as quickly taken down. A sharp-eyed Berry alerted us to the possible leak. The Most Popular Names 2011 announcement was supposed to have been made today, but was postponed until Monday morning on The Today Show. But Nameberry may have just scooped NBC, thanks to our wonderful Berries! xxxx
And now on to our regularly scheduled program. This year, Nameberry says Happy Mother’s Day by saluting the best baby-naming celebs who have become moms since last Mother’s Day–some for the first time, some not. We’re staying away from the more extreme choices (so sorry, Mariah and Beyonce and Jessica), in favor of those that have shown an elegant sense of style, a degree of creativity–and in a few cases some ingenuity by unearthing some great buried treasures.
Agnes had been completely out of sight when Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany chose it for their baby girl—a saintly, lacy relic packed away in a trunk in the attic. Now, overnight, and just as Julia Roberts did with Hazel and Jennifer Garner did with Violet, this celebrity choice has wired Victorian Agnes onto twenty-first century parents’ fave lists. And yup, Aggie might be the next Maggie.

I would shamelessly rip off any of these baby names. Except for Weston Lee, sorry. Willa Lou is another I’d gladly use. Sometimes Stars get it so right, huh?!

Most of these are really charming. I have to say though, I don’t see Geraldine coming back like Josephine has, and the Gerry nickname is a big reason.

I have to say that these stars chose well. Beautiful names to go with beautiful babies!

I like all of these, except Willow Sage. I’ve just never liked Willow at all…oh well. For the most part, beautiful names!

Agnes Lark = my favorite from these.

I dont like all of the names, but I do salute these celebrities for giving their children normal names.
I like Penelope Athena and Georgia Geraldine (I don’t see Geraldine coming back in a big way as a first name though).
I haven’t warmed up to Agnes, but I do like the combination Agnes Lark for some reason. It makes Agnes sound more fun.

It’s funny how, as someone in my 50’s, the names I’d always loved — which were so out of fashion when I was having children — are in fasion now. Agnes, Beatrice, Jean, Georgia, Geraldine, Margaret, Harriet, Milo — if I’d mentioned I loved these names to my contemporaries, I’d have been looked at as nuts. I love Lark and Willow, names I got from books, and Athena and Luca (although I still think of Luca Brazzi). Thomas, of course, is the name of my own son. While my own aunt Geraldine is Geri as an adult, she was Chi Chi as a little girl. Dina too might be a sweet nn for Geraldine.

I love them all except Penelope and that’s a personal thing. I like West more than Weston and Lark Agnes more than Agnes Lark.

A little sad the Pearl Clementine didn’t make the list. Its probably my favorite of the year!

I wish my favorite, Gloria, wasn’t becoming so recognized again! Thank goodness one of my other faves isn’t too cool yet.

LOVE Leo Grey, like my Leo Jack!

To emilycecelia: Stay tuned for the Father’s Day list, when we salute the dads who made great name choices–it’s a good bet Pearl Clementine will be there.

Agnes Lark, Leo Grey, and Rex Harrison are absolutely perfect names! These combos are just so amazingly stunning. Come to think of it, the three would be a nice sibset too. Agnes, Leo, & Rex

Ugh, Sophia/Sophie and Jacob – enough already! I love Agnes, although not Aggie or Maggie. Time for Mary to make a comeback, too. How about Mary Agnes? In the 1950s, I went to school with several Mary Agneses and Mary Alices. Beautiful names!
