Flynn Origin and Meaning

The name Flynn is a boy's name of Irish origin meaning "son of the red-haired one".

Flynn, a charming Irish surname, is still used only quietly, despite its easygoing, casual cowboy charm, unlike Finn which is a star of this genre. Flynn was the choice of Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr for their baby boy, and is also the middle name -- used as his first -- of a son of Miranda's fellow supermodel Elle Macpherson, of Gary Oldman's son Gulliver and Marley Shelton's daughter West.

Flynn Rider (born Eugene Fitzherbert) is the dashing animated hero of the Disney film "Tangled." On TV's "Breaking Bad", Flynn was what young Walter Jr. tried to rename himself. The name was long associated with the swashbuckling Errol Flynn, inspiration of the phrase "in like Flynn." Some may connect this name to controversial former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn

Flynn entered the U.S. Top 1000 in 2011, and is a highly popular choice in Australia and New Zealand.

I personally don't find Flynn substantial enough to use as a first name, but definitely a middle. If we're talking F names for boys, I'd pick Floyd over Flynn and Finn.

I believe the late JFK Jr had gone on record that "Flynn" was his name of choice for a potential son.

I love Flynn as a pet name possibility, personally- I'd love to have a happy and goofy-looking large cuddlebear of a dog named Flynn, or an affectionate scrap of tomcat named Flynn. Personally, I can't quite picture using Flynn in real life on an actual baby boy since I can't imagine it aging very well (Errol Flynn carried the name well, but he was Errol and not Flynn!). As a middle name, yes maybe.

Flynn could be a great alternative to Finn, Finn has become far too popular for my taste.
