Alexis Origin and Meaning

The name Alexis is a girl's name of English, Greek origin meaning "defender".

Alexis, a one-time exclusively-boys’ name, was more popular than its sister Alexandra for quite a while, but last year Alexandra was the more popular name. Alexis was a Top 20 girls’ name from 1994-2010 but has experienced a decline in popularity in recent years, though now it's one of the top unisex names.

Alexis zoomed to popularity following the introduction of the Dynasty character Alexis Carrington in the 1980s--which gave it a sexy, sleek image--was quite popular throughout the 90's and 2000's, peaking at the third most popular girls’ name in 1999.

One of the few notable female pre-Carrington Alexises was 1940s actress Alexis Smith, who had some minimal impact on the name, which entered the list in 1943. A current bearer is Alexis Bledel, who played Rory on Gilmore Girls and currently stars on The Handmaid's Tale.

I've never known any Alexises (how are you supposed to make Alexis plural, though?) so I'm open

Thepandaprincess223 Says:

Although Alexis is so over used, I still do quite like it, and prefer it to Alexa or Alexia. Alexis has been used on so many girls that I would definitely think Alexis is unisex

MaryKathryn Says:

I just hear this so much. I honestly loathe this name.

Lady Escalade Says:

This is my name. I dislike it when people associate it with "sex" or sexy. It is a very harsh sounding name. But I do think it's pretty. Probably wouldn't use it, but I do get compliments on it. People generally have a nice reaction to it.

QuxxnAphrosephone Says:

I can't be the only one that thinks it sounds odd as a female name? I've only ever known males named Alexis.

AlexxisLynn Says:

My names Alexis, although I spell it Alexxis. I do love my name and I think it has wonderful meaning. The name fits me very well, and goes along great with my personality! I really am a defender!

No worries :)

AldabellaxWulfe Says:

Oh, cool. It actually makes me feel better about it being used so frequently on girls, knowing that it is legitimately unisex. Thanks for the info! :)

Zoey_Artemisia Says:

From what I've read on Ancient Greek names Alexis is a diminutive of both Alexander and Alexandra, making it unisex. Alexa and Alexia are both female diminutives of Alexandra only. The opposite goes for Alexius as well.

AldabellaxWulfe Says:

Really? I was under the imperssion that Alexius was the original masculine form - with Alexis being a masculine diminuitive and Alexia being the legitimate feminine version - though I could be wrong.

Zoey_Artemisia Says:

Um what Namberry? This name has always been truely unisex. This name is the Ancient Greek feminisation of the name Alexius

SimoneKadele Says:

I prefer this on a boy, although I really like Alexei.
