Conrad
Conrad Origin and Meaning
Solid and intellectual, with just a touch of ruggedness thanks to that rad ending, Conrad has appeared consistently in on the US popularity charts since the 19th century. Over the years, it has been leant a literary air by the writer Joseph Conrad, a pop of rock energy by the Elvis-like character in the movie Bye, Bye, Birdie, and more recently, a serious, kind-hearted, and handsome feel by The Summer I Turned Pretty.
Derived from Old German, and meaning "brave counsel", it has been borne by a 10th century saint and a number of German kings and nobles. Lord Byron's 1814 poem, The Corsair featured an anti-hero of the name, which may have helped re-popularize it in the English speaking world in the 19th century.
One of its most well-known bearers is hotelier Conrad Hilton, great-grandfather of the Paris generation, while there have been fictive Conrads on shows like Weeds and CSI.
In recent years, Conrad has been trending upwards in the US, and the latest count saw it re-enter the Top 500 for the first time in nearly 50 years. Given to 654 boys, it may continue to rise, thanks to the 2020s TV adaptation and movie of The Summer I Turned Pretty.
International variants include the Italian Corrado, the German Kord, and the Dutch Coen, while the original may be pronounced as KON-rad in the US or KAWN-rat in Germany.
