Gender: Female Meaning of Michael: "who is like God?" Origin of Michael: Hebrew

Michael Origin and Meaning

The name Michael is a girl's name of Hebrew origin meaning "who is like God?".

Michael ranked in the Top 1000 for GIRLS' names for more than half a century, from 1938 until 1994. In the late 1970s and early 80s, during the heyday of The Waltons which starred actress Michael Learned, it reached as high as the 300s.

What happened then? Our guess is that the rise of Michaela, the tenacity of Michael at the head of the boys' list, and the popularity of Michelle/Michele all conspired to knock Michael-for-girls off the list. And giving this name to your daughter would invite a lifetime of explanations, though it does have a musical sound that can be as attractive for girls as it is for boys...and a darn sight fresher.

Why are so many people hating on Michael for a girl? It’s great for the right person and no one said you have to name your daughter michael if you don’t want to

QueenieGuldbaek Says:

How about Michelle or Michaela/Micaela/Mikaela/Mikayla?????

Gayle1978 Says:

I wonder what’s wrong with actual feminine names. There are so many beautiful and strong names for girls that I still don’t get why parents would rather give her a masculine name like Michael than a name like Judith.

tx903 Says:

There are so many gorgeous girl names out there that it's hard to see why anyone would ever revert to using a boy's name on a girl. It's just ugly and disgraceful.

tx903 Says:

Amanda is a beautiful name for a woman. Michael, not so much.

TechnoKitten Says:

Michael?On a girl?

April Ludgate Says:

Name her Michaela and use this as a nickname.

cheesy-biscuit Says:

Please. Don’t. Use. This. On. Your. Daughter

letmein Says:

This is a boy's name. Not a girl's name!

winnieg Says:

This is not a girls name. The poor girl would have to keep correcting people from mistaking her for a boy. Just use Michaela or Michelle, please!

Leah_ Says:

Everyone would assume she was transgender when she got older.

paulapuddephatt Says:

The French Michele is fine, in that language and context. Jean is basically John in France, but Jean, pronounced "jeen" and in UK, USA, etc, is still a female name.

paulapuddephatt Says:

Absolutely. I have no problem with Mickey or Mikey being used as nicknames for either gender. I could even live with those as given names for a girl, as it is no worse than Charlie. I would rather see Charles and Charlotte as legal names, but that is personal taste only. What I don't expect or to find okay is Charles for a girl or Charlotte for a boy. How could anyone not get that concept???

paulapuddephatt Says:

It annoys me so much that this classic, handsome boys' name is used for girls. Use Michelle or Michaela for a girl. They're both lovely. (Michelle is my middle name.). Robin, Ashley, etc are unisex. Michael, James, Kevin and Toby are male names.

pinpin Says:

Personally wouldn't be likely to use it but I really like it for a girl.

Chae-Eun Says:

Not crazy about it.

Cara Jane Says:

One of the 19 kids of the Bates family from the TV Show Bringing Up Bates are called Michael Christian Bates. And yes she's a girl. She has a fully male name. I mean surely if you're going to name her a boys name you'd choose a feminine middle name she can go by.

caetano Says:

well Michelle sounds like the french male name Michel, so it could work.

caetano Says:

At least on girls it has some personality left

laurashgre Says:

A while back people were saying that names like Madison, Mackenzie, Kasey, Allison, etc were meant for a certain gender and now look where we are. I've heard of a few girls being names Michael and none of them seemed to hate it. I wouldn't, personally. Either way, I think it's cute and could work on the right child.

ispyabrownbair Says:

My best friend is named Michael Ann and we all call her Mike (per her request) now that we are in our twenties. She loves her name! I've been friends with her since we were in elementary school and she has never once complained about her name. My name is Amanda ("normal" girls name) and have always hated my name.

TaliaCat Says:

There are wayyyy more nice girls' names out there than boys names... Why take a grreat, historical, strongly masculine name like Michael and use it on a girl? Would we use Michelle on a boy? I don't think so...

madison786 Says:

The funny thing is that this name is INCREASING in popularity for a girl. It went from 5184 to 3949 at +1235. smh.

feuer Says:

My best (girl) friend was named Cheyenne Michael M****a.

Guest Says:

I actually like this name for a girl but I'll never use it but I would use Michaela or Michelle. If you like the name Michael for a girl so much, use it as a middle name not a first name!

Guest Says:

I like this name for a boy AND a girl! (Mostly for a boy) But for a girl, I like the variants Michaela and Michelle. But this name sounds nice on both genders (but more on a boy) because if you name a girl this, she'll get teased.

unicornluvgirl Says:

I much prefer Mika and Michelle. Both are beautiful.

Theodora_Phoenix Says:

THANK YOU! I totally agree.

AnonymousPerson Says:

Michael for a girl? Now that's just nonsense. NONSENSE. If you want to make Michaela more tomboyish, call the child Micky for short. Please don't use Michael for a girl.

Theodora_Phoenix Says:

Michael is not unisex. It is a BOY name. All the girls named Michael were given BOY names. I think boy names should not be given to girls as feminizations exist. And
they do in this case. There's Michelle and Michaela.

namenerd8 Says:

A friend of a friend has Michael as a middle name, she likes it

Sweekune Says:

Not for a girl. I can't imagine this on a young girl or woman. Surely they would get sick of explaining it.
