I like this a lot! It reminds me of James, quite clipped and handsome. But it needs combining with a surname that is obviously a surname. If the surname could also be a first name there’s going to be confusion. Eg Jones Edward, Jones Thomas, Jones Charles, problematic. Jones Macintosh or Jones O’Donnell, much clearer.

MonikerWanderer Says:

This is an awesome first name! I'm usually not in favor of surnames as first names, but this could work. It sounds and looks like James, which can be a first and last name.

We named our son Jones in 2014. It's not an honor name; we just liked it. We don't hate the association with Indiana Jones, and his "Jonesy," either, as it is a fav character of ours...but not why we named him that. We like the strength and - almost - familiarity of it. Hasn't been a problem, but people have to repeat it back a lot to make sure they heard right (mostly older folks). Some think we are saying Jonas or Joan (for my son...really?). Most people compliment it once they swirl it around in their brains for a couple seconds.

Hailey Says:

I just hear the British guy on Indiana Jones calling him Jonesy.

RoddyThlayli Says:

Sounds weird in the first place.

My son is named Jones, which I obviously think is a great name ;) It is the maiden name of my husband's Grandmother, and is my husband's middle name. We thought it was a great way to honor a family name. We call him Jonesy. It has yet to be "problematic". :)

Guest Says:

My grandma has a friend we call Jonesy because that's her last name. I've heard Jonesy as a first name on tv as well, it's not the worst surname-as-first I can tell you that.

Nooshi Says:

This is just a guess, but maybe because people will think you are calling after your child by their last name, which would be a bit odd, but not exactly problematic. I like Jones.

EmmaF Says:

I kinda like it . . . why is it described as problematic?

Theodora_Phoenix Says:

This is definitely more of a last name.
