Royal Baby Name: All bets are on!

As the due date for the Duchess of Cambridge approaches, the British betting establishments have gone into mad odds-shifting mode on every aspect of William and Kate’s child including the royal baby name.  They’re taking bets on the future sovereign’s hair color to future university and career choices and even which magazine will have the exclusive photos. But of course the main focus is on the baby’s name–putting on the table some obvious, conventional royal ancestor options, and also some bizarre, outrageous outliers.  Here, the bookmaker’s top options for the royal baby name.

Philip

At about 23 to 1, this name would obviously honor William ’s grandfather, who has been ailing of late. But since there has never been a British monarch with the name—there have been only eight names used in almost a thousand years—we’d expect to find this one in middle place, as it is with both Charles and William. Philip is not in the Top 100 in either the UK or US.

I hope they pick something sophisticated, but not necessarily predictable.

My tips for the record: Victoria Elizabeth Mary or George Arthur Philip Charles. Second choice for a girl would be Alice Victoria Mary.

I confess that I would be disappointed by Alexandra or Charlotte. They are so popular around here, they bore me a little bit. Keeping my fingers crossed for Mary, Alice, (or my favorite long shot, Frances!). George, Arthur, and Louis are my favorites for a boy.

I also thought they might use Frances/Francesca for one of the mn as it was Diana’s.
The Duchess father’s mn is Francis.

I’ve been a royalty nerd since I was little! I’d bet on a Princess Alice, Charlotte or Alexandra and a Prince George, Frederick or maaaaybe Arthur. And maaaaybe Eleanor or Victoria! In all probability it won’t happen, but I’d love a Princess Matilda, Prince John or Prince Richard!

@sarahmezz George Arthur Philip Charles is Prince Charles’ name backwards! I know some think that these classic names are too boring, but repeating his name entirely would be incredibly so!

I’m hoping for a Princess Alice or a Prince Louis, either would be divine! I know Eleanor is currently 12/1 in the betting but I rather selfishly hope they don’t choose that! It’s my favourite name and currently sitting around top 50 in the UK (I think) so I don’t really want it to climb any higher!

Alice would be lovely and I confess I’d love to see a future King Arthur. I’d like to see a sophisticated, elegant choice but not necessarily an expected name like Victoria or Elizabeth. Iris would be an intriguing choice.

I feel like there’s a good chance a girl would have my name (plus a few extra middles) which is quite exciting 🙂

I’m Alice Victoria.

My guess would be Alice Elizabeth Diana Victoria or George Arthur Philip Charles.

I love the idea of a little princess Alexandra, Charlotte, Victoria or Alice – or Prince George, Arthur or Louis!

How about another Queen Eleanor?

spotlightstarlit Says:

I’m guessing a girl named Elizabeth Diana Alice Charlotte. For a boy I do like the idea of George, but can’t hazard a guess about a a full name.

Finally, the blog is letting me post.

My favorite for a boy is George, and I think that’s the most likely choice. I would imagine Arthur and Philip being middles. Philip as a first would be quite handsome, as would Arthur (this would actually rock) or Alexander.

For a girl, my favorites are Alice and Eleanor. I think Victoria is the most likely choice, though. Hopefully, they’ll surprise me. Alexandra would be lovely, though. Charlotte would be blah. I imagine Elizabeth will be a middle. Margaret would be a nice possibility for a first or middle.

I’m really hoping for Princess Mary or Alice, or Prince George or Louis. As for middles, I could see them using Frances, Elizabeth and Charlotte (in some combination), and Albert, Charles and Philip

Star_Girl Says:

I’d have to say Victoria Alice for the girl, or Elizabeth Alice Victoria. For the boy, I’d have to say William Arthur.

I just can’t imagine Elizabeth or Victoria being used as first names – too much history. Diana, agreed, is very unlikely as a first name, though Frances could be a dark horse despite its lack of royal precedence (at least for females). Charlotte seems likely, but with Charles two ahead of her as monarch, I just am not sure on that one. Caroline, perhaps?

My guess for a girl is Alexandra. I think within the middle name we will see Elizabeth, Charlotte or Caroline, Diana or Frances, Mary, and potentially Catherine. I’ll go with Alexandra Mary Diana Charlotte Elizabeth for flow’s sake, but I’d say the list of honoring importance is Queen Elizabeth, Princess Diana, and then anybody else, so, Alexandra Elizabeth Diana Frances Mary?

A boy’s first name would not be William, Charles, Philip – could be George, although there have been a couple in recent history. Edward seems fairly unlikely, too. As does Henry, because of Prince Harry, though Henry feels like a name they’d use. As does James, but there are too many close James’ to use that as a first name, I think.

My guess for a boy is Louis. And I’m not too confident in that. Louis Charles Edward Philip George? Or maybe Frederick, though neither sounds particularly “Will and Kate” to me, whatever that means. Maybe they’ll pull from their Russian relatives and use Nicholas or even Alexander! I could see that. Nicholas Charles William Edward George or Alexander Charles Edward William George.

BerryBry Says:

Diana’s middle name is Frances so that could be used to honour her instead. Having searched their family tree, some others I’d guess would be:
Matilda *
Edgar/ Edmund/ Edward *
Alfred
Eleanor *
Margaret
Anthony *
Constantine
Christian
Frederick
Albert
Louise *
Caroline
Peter *

I put a star by the ones I’m hoping for!

My guesses are:

Alexandra Eleanor Matilda Frances Windsor
Edward James Anthony Albert Windsor

I’m thinking Anne Victoria Frances Margaret and Philip William Arthur Frederick. A little convention with a little unexpectedness as they tend to be.

Alexandra is what my money is on, if it’s a girl, with dedications in some way to Diana, The Queen and possibly Kate’s mother Carole too. Alexandra has the traditional element to it but hasn’t been used so much in recent times for the royals as a first, predominant name. Charlotte is a nice option too.
If it’s a boy there will be some reference to their – William and Kate’s – fathers, Charles and Michael, but I can’t think they’d be the first name. Kate may want to reference her brother too, James, which would a nice first name but I, again, doubt it would be used as such. George and Arthur are both strong names, and again traditional. Both my top choices for the baby if its a boy.
Boy or girl, good luck to what’s bound to be a beautiful family!

Would Lillybeth – Lilbeth (Lil’beth) – LizBeth … or some sort of combo in this neck of the woods be too rediculous?

My “personal preference” is pretty neutral – certainly nothing to do with the above. (I kinda like Charlotte…..or Elizabeth -Dianna-Charlotte-Carole….)

I’ve just heard (a lot) that Wills & KAte seem to like to be able to abbreviate names – Charlotte could easily be Lottie, or even Charlie – hey – even Prince Harry sounded a bit “out there” to me …. at the very, very beginning!!)

It’s the abbreviation that makes me think of the Lil’Beth sort of think.

BTW – what do you think the domain “HRHPrincessAlexandraofCambridge.com” – or the likes – would be worth ?!?!? LOL!

charlieandperry1 Says:

June 22nd, 2013 at 3:36 pm

@Honeylove Yes, Lilbeth & co are very definitely ridiculous, especially anything with an apostrophe or a random capital letter in it! I am very sure they will pick something traditional. If they do love abbreviated forms of names (like the RF have in the past- Vicky, Eddy, Bertie, Lilibet, Harry etc) then they’ll choose a longer form and use the nickname in private.

I think 4 given names is the most likely. Carole won’t make an appearance- it’s a dated, frumpy name and they’d likely honour her in other ways (Charlotte, or perhaps Caroline). Louis is too French! Perhaps as a middle. Edward and Henry are probably out due to close family members with the names. Highly doubt Philip will be a FN. Diana probably won’t be seen due to the controversy surrounding her and the RF, but Frances/Francis are good bets.

I keep trying and failing to come up with combos! I think Wills & Kate may surprise us in the middles but will probs stick to tradition for the firsts.

But something tells me it’s a girl. I would love to see a Victoria– and I love the suggestion above of Eleanor.

I’m holding out for Alice or Adelaide for a girl. Arthur would be fun for a boy, but I think it will be George.

Nyx Says:

Out of the ones listed, I’d love seeing them go for something like (feminine) Victoria or (masculine) Philip or Arthur. However, I’m kind of hoping that they break out of the box somewhat and choose something like (feminine) Agnes or Harriet or (masculine) Amos or Basil… classic names, but ones that aren’t as common today… names with a great history, but a funky feel… names that aren’t (or at least not often, if they are) found on their family trees… names that no one will expect, but that many will then give some second thoughts to 🙂

I’m not saying that it should be one of the above, just giving some examples… also, I know that it’s about as likely as a snowstorm happening the same day Kate gives birth 😉

My black horse bet is on Florence for a girl. I just have a feeling about it. I think it has enough history behind it to make it legit. It’s both a conservative and surprising pick, which I think will fit what they are looking for in a name. Mary is my second thought, although I could also see Adelaide.

God lord, I can finally moment on the blogs! @charlieandperry – I know it’s Charles’s name backwards! I guess my point is that whatever name they choose, it’ll be exceedingly boring!

sarahmezz Says:

@finuneby – Regarding Florence, Prime Minister David Cameron recently had a baby daughter named Florence, so I’d say its unlikely.

charlieandperry1 Says:

Classic names are boring? Wow.

I think the issue with Florence is that it’s got no history of use with major royals, rather than that it’s been used by the PM. This kid will one day be the monarch- I highly doubt they’re going to stray too far off the beaten path. And If William & Kate were to rule out every name used by the extended family/politicians/friends/nobility etc, then we’d be looking at something like Jayden Waynetta Chardonnay Qween. Would that be interesting enough for you, @sarahmezz?
