Snap! Great Photography Baby Names

In these digital days, everyone is a photographer. But that’s not to say everyone is a Photographer. In the history of photography, which dates back only a couple of centuries, there were a number of towering figures who happened to have—surprise!—some particularly interesting names, including:

Penn

Irving Penn, whose surname is a lot more child-friendly than his first these days, was known for first fashion photography, and then striking portraits of artists like Picasso and Georgia O’Keeffe. Strong and simple, the name Penn has been given a shot of sex appeal by Gossip Girl hottie Penn Badgley.

Angus McBean is the most delightfully Scottish name of all time. I think Ansel has a lot of potential as an alternative to Andrew. August and Imogen are such strong Nameberry favorites I wouldn’t be surprised to see them gain mainstream momentum in the next few years. I would love to see Dorothea and Hugo revived as well. Penn could rise on the surname wave. I quite like Laszlo, but it seems to be stuck in limbo. Lisette is sweet, if a little lispy. Fox and Walker are personal favorites — both are on my long list.

Wonderful post, as always. 🙂

what abut Diane (Arbus) or Francesca (Woodman)?

I like a good many of these (on other people’s kids). Hugo, Ansel, August, Dorothea are lovely. I’d love Fox in the middle.

As a photographer, I also like Lewis (Hine), Nicephore (Niepce) who made the first photograph, (Senol) Zorlu, Dimitris (Theocharis), Cornelia (Adams), Bjorn (Lofterud)…I know too many I love 🙂

This is my favorite blog post to date. I love almost all of these, especially Andreas, Ansel, August, Dorothea, Laszlo, and Lisette. They all seem really grounded and usable but also a little more interesting, not trendy or too popular, but not boring either.

Technical comment: in most of the recent blogs in the slideshow format, the photos have not been sized to the designated blog area of the webpage. Many of the photos are too big and underlap beneath the names menu on the right. Usually I can manage to find the right-arrow button underneath everything and click through, but this time it’s so buried, I can’t progress beyond Laszlo. I had to select from the master menu of thumbnails underneath to complete reading the article. I’m using Firefox. All-in-all, a pretty respectable collection of names, and all very usable. My favorites are Laszlo and Fox. Enjoyable blog…except for the technical issues.

Some wonderful names on this blog.

If I had the chance I would consider Andreas, August, Cecil, Dorothea, Hugo, Imogen and Laszlo.

Not too crazy about Fox (sly like a fox), Penn (I write with one), Walker (“walk her”) or Lisette (too cutesy).

Angus is a great Scottish name so it’s a shame about the beef.

I like the name Ansel and his photograhs are gorgeous but I just want to add the word “buy” before his name (buy and sell).

Yes, I have the same technical issues in Firefox as Saracita00….

I like a lot of these names: Ansel, Fox, Hugo, Penn, Imogen, Lisette. These are so romantic and lovely in my mind.

I would love Walker if it wasn’t associated with Pres. Bush for me. (Ugh.) August is finally starting to grow on me as a way to Gus.

The slide shows work perfectly for me, but I’m on Safari. I like them so much better this way than how they were before, but I would like them even better if they didn’t bring up a new page every time you flipped through. (The thumbnails underneath are a great touch.)

I really like August and Fox but a lot of the others were very nice names.

I’m with some of the others. The pictures are way too big on my screen and they go under the stuff on the right. I can’t see the arrow on a few and I have to click in the thumbnail.s If it weren’t for the thumbnails, I wouldn’t be able to see all the pictures. I also don’t like that it opens a new window every time but that’s just a personal, not technical thing.

I’m on Firefox

I love August, Angus, Hugo, and Imogen so very much. I love how they are beginning to be considered viable choices for new American children as well as European. Penn, Walker, and Fox I’m a bit iffy on, mostly in that using them myself seems highly improbable but I feel as if in the case that I saw them on another child in one of my day care classes I would love it. I have a Walter which this has proven especially true with.

I think I love more names on this list than I do on any other one! Fox would for sure be the name of a future son if our last name didn’t begin with S… and if we weren’t going with Wolf for the first boy (it’s a family name). So many great, lesser-used, legitimate names here. I love names that are formal but not boring.

Love this blog. Love photography, history, AND names. Dorothea, Fox, Imogen, and Penn are fantastic.
