Gender: Female Meaning of Tara: "rocky hill" Origin of Tara: Irish

Tara Origin and Meaning

The name Tara is a girl's name of Irish origin meaning "rocky hill".

Despite a rich history in Irish myth preceding its plantation appearance in Gone with the Wind, widespread use in the seventies caused Tara to lose its Irish accent.

American actress Tara Reid helped bring attention to this name, though her career dropped off in tandem with the popularity of the name. Her most recent credits include the B-movie Sharknado series.

I've tried but I don't remember what her last name was (not something you think to ask someone when you're six!) Maybe one day I'll be able to find her again.

You should try and find her. With technology, most people have some kind of digital footprint.

I had a friend at school when I was around six years old named Tara-Dee.

She moved away unexpectedly and I never saw her again. She was so pretty, with gorgeous blonde hair and was so kind towards me. I'll always have a soft spot for this name because of her.

Beautiful name, love it so much - definitely the best name to come out of 'Gone With The Wind', for me

People need to get over the pop culture references. I come from an Irish family where it's pronounced 'Tah-rah', not 'Terra'. It means rocky hill because it's sacred ground in Ireland where the ancient kings used to meet. .. In India, it's also pronounced the Irish way and is an ancient name there also. It means 'star' in India and in Hinduism they worship a Goddess Tara. Goddess Tara came from the stars down to the Earth to help the people. She is considered very compassionate and associated with Kwan Yin.

I can assure you, although I may be a bit of a tomboy, I am not a valley girl.

Tara has a bit of a bratty side to me. Like Tess and Tish. A little valley-girl; a little airheaded.

I like both pronunciations, and everything else about this name! Tara Maclay from the Buffy tv show is a good association, also.
