Gender: Male Meaning of Montgomery: "man power" Origin of Montgomery: Norman

The name Montgomery is a boy's name of Norman origin meaning "man power". Montgomery and is often added to lists like Vintage Baby Names and discussed in our forums with posts like "Your Six Kids - Take Three, Leave Three".

From the experts:

This image of this distinguished Anglo-Scottish surname, drawn from the French place name of the ancient castle of Saint Foi de Montgomery, is rapidly shifting from fusty and formal to cool. And dashing short form Monty (or Monte) nudges it to cute.

Best-known bearer of the name is beautiful-but-tortured midcentury actor Montgomery Clift. Roger de Montgomery was a Norman nobleman who was made Earl of Arundel after he invaded England in 1066 and Sir Bernard Montgomery was a noted army commander in World War II. Montgomery is also the proper first name of Star Trek's engineer Scotty and, less flatteringly, the middle name of The Simpsons' evil Mr. Burns.

My first name is Montgomery and I'm a 22 year old blonde, 5'2", Caucasian female! I've never met another Montgomery and have only met a few other Monty's, all male. I love my name and get compliments on it constantly. It's so nice to have a unique name that nobody else has. It's so bold and has helped me stand out in life (which can be both good and bad).

Highly recommend for a bold, beautiful girls name, but I guess I'm a little biased (:

I've been falling in love with the combination Montgomery Moses, came here to discover it's the name Sacha Baron Cohen gave to his son!

This is a really cool name! I have only really heard it as a surname, but as a first name it's really different. Very regal name to grow into. Nickname Monty is super adorable also!

I really like Montgomery, even though it's not my normal style. It has the same slightly eccentric, aristocratic vibe that I get from names like Barnaby and Peregrine. I think Monty is a wonderful nickname!

I want to like Montgomery as a first name, but it sounds very last name-y to me. Probably because me and my cousin made up a character called Thompson Montgomery, who I write about a lot. I have the same problem with Mason as a first name, due to a character of mine named Thiago Mason.

It's one of those names that I want to like - but the only thing it makes me think of is Montgomery Burns from the Simpsons

I really like this name, but I don't like that it is also a last name.

You could probably get "Mr T" or perhaps "Murry" or "Merry" out of it. Although, in my personal opinion it's gorgeous enough as is.
