I think that most people (in the UK, at least) like this name in general, but tend to write it off as fantasy-esque and unrealistic due to the Arthurian legend. Which is sad, because I believe that Merlin would make for a wonderfully innovative choice of name, if given the opportunity. I did a bit of research and found that Merlin was #408 in France back in 2008 - so at least it's getting a bit of usage somewhere.
