Maren Origin and Meaning

The name Maren is a girl's name of Latin origin meaning "sea".

Maren is one of the many twenty-first-century takes on Mary--but we find the more classic Marin spelling preferable. When spelled Maren, the pronunciation seems more clearly to resemble Mary, with the emphasis on the first syllable. Marin, the spelling also used for the beautiful coastal county north of San Francisco, is often pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable, as in Marie.

I just discovered this name and I think I've fallen in love! I like how one user described it pronounced as "Karen with an M", I think it sounds gorgeous that way!

I love this name...and when it comes to pronouncing this spelling (Maren) vs. Marin...I think that the girl below explained it very well. Pronounce it Karen but with a M. Finally someone explained it to me so I could understand it in writing :)

I'm Maren, I love my name! It's unique and fun. The only thing I don't like is having to explain how to pronounce it everytime when I meet new people. I just say it's Karen with an M! That usually helps people visualize it. Oh! And that they don't make key chains with my name on it lol

SimoneKadele Says:

Yes, as the PP says, this is a Scandinavian name. We pronounce it MAH-ren in my family.

Working Dog Doc Says:

I'm a Maren and it's absolutely not a "21st century take on Mary." My maternal grandfather's grandmother (so my great great grandmother) was named Maren and was from Denmark. She Americanized it to Mary. My mother's middle name is Maren, so my first name is Maren.

In my family, we have pronounced it much like Marin County, just with an E instead of an I sound (i.e.- Ma-Ren). I have heard Mare-n and Mar-En all my life, so I would not give it as a first name to a daughter. A middle name would be best.

irishmom Says:

I'm in love with Maren right now. I like the option of the nn: Ren as well or even Mare. Both are appealing to me.
