Gender: Female Meaning of Claire: "bright, clear" Origin of Claire: French form of Clara Claire's Popularity in 2017: #49

The name Claire is a girl's name of French origin meaning "bright, clear". Claire is ranked #49 on our popularity charts and is often added to lists like Middle Names for Girls and discussed in our forums with posts like "A brother or sister for little Jack or Olivia".

From the experts:

Claire, luminous, simple, and strong, with a barely distinguishable French accent, is one of those special names that is familiar yet distinctive, feminine but not frilly, combining historical depth with a modern edge. And though Claire is enjoying revived popularity, it will never be seen as trendy. Claire is also a great middle name choice.

Claire is usually seen as the French spelling of the name, while the equally appropriate Clare is English and Clair is French too. Clara, once seen as a stuffier version, has lately gained some fashion edge, primarily because it has more vintage charm and is somewhat more unusual. The Italian Chiara is another recommended choice.

Famous women named Claire include the medieval Saint Clare of Assisi (who was made the patron saint of television in 1958 because of her reputed power to see events at a distance), writer Clare Booth Luce, silent screen siren Clara Bow, and actresses Claire Bloom and Claire Danes.

There have been countless fictional Claires as well, including ideal mom Clair Huxtable, Molly Ringwald's character in The Breakfast Club, Clare Kendry in Nella Larsen's novel Passing, and characters in House of Cards, Lost, Six Feet Under, Modern Family, and the Outlander series.

I find it so funny that people think this name sounds tomboyish. It always sounds girly to me.

I love this name! It's so cute, and I'm surprised it's not as popular, I imagine it should be in the top 10 because it's cute, spunky, new, and old!

I know two Claire's, who are polar opposites, but their names suit them both perfectly. One is a preppy and girly gymnast, the other is smart and sarcastic and loves to read, but Claire fits them both!
I also really like the spelling Clare, because it seems slightly less feminine, but not too masculine either.

love this name! It is a bit tomboyish but still beautiful for your little miracle and bundle of joy! I know a Claire (Spelt Clare) who is a tomboy lobs climbing trees, wearing shorts and t- shirts but I know another one (Spelt Claire) who loves dresses, makeup (she's about 24 though) This suits anyone! But I think the Clare spelling is more tomboyish!💖

I have three daughters named: Elizabeth (she is 9) Cinnamon (3 months) and Claire (4) I used to HATE the name Claire because all I could think about was that red head in the breakfast club named Claire but when it started getting popular it grew out if my mind and I started loving it
