Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana!
Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge have named their new daughter Charlotte, the recent favorite with the betting public. The baby’s middle names are Elizabeth, after the queen, the baby’s great-grandmother, and Diana, after William‘s late mother and the baby’s grandmother.
Charlotte is a feminization of Charles, the name of the baby’s grandfather the Prince of Wales, and may also be a nod to her maternal grandmother Carole Middleton, as Carole also relates to the name Charles. And Charlotte is also the middle name of Pippa Middleton, the Duchess’s sister.
A classic girls’ name that’s become increasingly popular in recent years, Charlotte is set to break into the USTop 10. Charlotte is currently Number 20 in England, 21 in Scotland, and also in the Top 50 in Wales, Germany, and the Netherlands.
It takes its meaning “free man” from Charles.
In a version of American royalty, Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former president Bill and presidential candidate Hillary, named her baby daughter Charlotte last year. Princess Caroline of Monaco also has a now-grown daughter named Charlotte.
Elizabeth is a Hebrew name meaning “pledged to God” and one of the most enduring female names in the Western World. A royal favorite, Elizabeth is the name of the reigning queen as well as of the queen’s late mother. Elizabeth I was one of the most famous monarch’s of England.
Elizabeth is also Duchess Catherine‘s middle name, as well as her mother’s middle name. It ranks Number 10 in the US and Number 37 in England, and is also among the Top 100 girls’ names in Wales, Scotland, and Ireland.
Charlotte had been the recent favorite with the bookmakers for the royal baby girl name, pulling ahead of Alice. Most seemed certain that the reigning monarch’s name, Elizabeth, would be in the mix somewhere.
Diana was a popular choice but there was much speculation around whether William and Catherine would choose a name with mixed associations to the Royal Family. But true to the couple’s talent for sticking with tradition while also asserting their personal taste, they chose Diana as the baby’s second middle name.
Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana has a total of three names, like her brother, Prince George Alexander Louis, a break from the more traditional four names given to royals. William‘s full name is William Arthur Philip Louis, while his brother is Henry Charles Albert David.

This was exactly my guess!! I had a feeling that it would be Alice or Charlotte, as those were the top runners. Charlotte seemed more likely not only as a nod to Prince Charles, but Charlotte is also Kate’s sister Pippa’s middle name. Then Elizabeth and Diana, for obvious reasons. So excited about this name and of course this beautiful princess.

Well 2 outta 3 ain’t bad! I swore it would be a -belle name Diana Charlotte. You know next year Charlotte will break the top 10! Pippa’s middle name is Charlotte too, so the family ties were extra strong with this one!
Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, simple yet regal. I like it.

As pretty as the name is, I was really hoping it would end up being something outside of the most predicted choices. Charlotte Elizabeth Diana is gorgeous, but I’m tired of Charlotte, and I think it would have been refreshing to see something a little out of the box. I would have died to see them name her something like Eloise. But she is a beautiful little princess, regardless! I’m happy for Kate and Will.

A pretty name!
Elizabeth’s also Catherine’s middle name, which is nice. George and Will share the middle name Louis, too, so that’s some nice symmetry.

It’s a good thing the couple added Elizabeth in the middle or this princess would have the exact same name as her first cousin, Lady Charlotte Diana Spencer. All three are lovely names but it really was a safe and boring choice. By relegating Diana to the second middle name spot, the combo indicates that William and Catherine didn’t want to ruffle any feathers of the Royal Family.

@ Mischa– technically Lady Charlotte Spencer is this baby’s 2nd (or even 3rd?) cousin. Her only first cousins will be any children Kate’s siblings or Prince Harry have in the future.
I agree this was a “boring” choice, but it’s also quite endearingly tender really, and unselfish. They’re honoring people who are important to them in every way with this name.

A truly beautiful name! And a little boring. I was hoping they would surprise everyone with Mary, Margaret, or Anne.
on May 4th, 2015 at 10:04 am
Lady Charlotte Spencer is actually Princess Charlotte’s second cousin–she’s the child of Will’s first cousin.
on May 4th, 2015 at 10:22 am
Oooh so close! My guess was Charlotte Elizabeth Frances (Frances being Diana’s MN.) I thought they may choose to honour Diana in a slightly less direct way due to the controversy and parallels the media would draw. I am glad they chose to go with Diana though.

Charlotte Elizabeth Diana is lovely. I think I would prefer Alice Elizabeth Diana myself
on May 4th, 2015 at 10:49 am
Kinda bummed they didn’t go with Alice Elizabeth Diana as I think George and Alice make a lovely sibset, but George and Charlotte are lovely too. A typical British sibset if you ask me.

A lovely name with nice family connections. I have to say I was expecting (and hoping!) for Alice though. Especially considering Prince William has a 2 year cousin on his mothers side called Charlotte Diana.

I love all of the honoring names they used. I also love that they used Charlotte, which is already incredibly popular. I know some people were upset when they used George since it wasn’t super popular before. I doubt that was any part of their motivation for going with Charlotte, but I still appreciate it!

It’s a little bland. But, it wasn’t like they were going to name her McSinsy Una or something. I love that they honored the late Princess of Wales.

So happy with this name! I loved both front-runners, Charlotte and Alice, but I was desperately hoping it would be Charlotte. Much as I love the name, it was already ruined for any future use (by me, at least) when Chelsea Clinton chose it. Now I can keep Alice on my girl’s list.

Took me a while to be allowed to post after longing in 4 times on the mobile version. I think this is a lovely name and honors family members that clearly mean a lot to them and is a perfectly royal name to me. I think this name is perfect.

It’s a beautiful name! I’m glad Diana was used as one of the middles. I was slightly surprised that they used both Charlotte and Diana, since William’s uncle, the Earl of Spencer (Diana’s brother) has a Charlotte Diana who’d be about 2 or 3 years old now. (Then again, I have cousins named James who were born three months apart from each other, both named after our grandfather, so sometimes this stuff just happens). My guess had been Mary Diana Elizabeth, and I’m surprised that I guessed both middles (though in reverse order). I hope they’ll use Mary in some capacity if they ever have another girl.

There will be a plethora of happy Brits today!! I love that the name honors close family members and it could not be more fitting for her family style- modern royals of the people: down to earth but ever caring a regal “heir” 😉

Personally would’ve gone with Elizabeth Charlotte Diana, but either way the name is absolutely gorgeous and holds tons of meaning for them! Congratulations on the beautiful little princess with the beautiful name!

I guessed Charlotte Diana Elizabeth- pretty close 😀 I thought Charlotte would be one of the more unlikely choices, though it was my favorite pick for them- I’m glad they went with it. Even with their relative also being named Charlotte, I don’t think it’s too much of a big deal; repeated name use within extended families is pretty common and NBD.
on May 4th, 2015 at 2:15 pm
I also guessed Charlotte Elizabeth Frances as a more subtle nod to Diana, so close! After hearing about the baby having a second cousin named Charlotte Diana only a few years older, I am amazed they still chose the name. No doubt that will be cause for tension the next time the families visit with one another.
on May 4th, 2015 at 2:25 pm
This was my guess! It just had the most family connections. I’m a little disappointed in the name… It was so expected and kind of boring. I wish they had gone out of the box a little bit. Now that they have an “heir and a spare” I wonder if they’ll have another… Maybe they’ll go out of the box with #3. 😉 (Although, I know pregnancy is hard on Kate, so we shall see!)
on May 4th, 2015 at 3:12 pm
I guessed Mary Elizabeth Diana, so 2/3. 😉 I wanted a Mary. George and Mary. Ah, well, now it’s George and Charlotte.
on May 4th, 2015 at 4:12 pm
I was going to guess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, but someone beat me to it!!! I think the name is elegant and perfect for a Princess of any age. I do agree with @eoxima though in which I prefer George and Alice as a sibset, but I think Charlotte goes just as well as George and Charlotte are both timeless names! I love how they honoured different members of their families in each name, especially using Diana to honour the Princess of Wales directly. Overall I absolutely love Charlotte Elizabeth Diana and while some may think it’s boring, it really is a perfect name for a little princess.
on May 4th, 2015 at 4:25 pm
I think it is a beautiful name! But will probably take Charlotte off of my own list of potential girl names due to an even greater popularity spike now.
on May 4th, 2015 at 6:14 pm
I was way off. First of all, I guessed a boy, but if I had guessed a girl, I would have guessed Mary Alice Charlotte or Mary Alice Frances. I didn’t expect them to be so bold using the first names of close relatives. I’m not a big Charlotte fan, but oh, well.
I would bet that this will be their last birth, though; it seems like they had them fairly close together to “get it over with” and now that they have one of each sex there’s not much need to try again.
on May 4th, 2015 at 7:25 pm
I was pretty close! I would have guessed Alice Elizabeth Diana, but that was taken…. Still, 2 out of 3, right?! Charlotte is adorable, and it goes greatly with George. I wondered whether or not they would use Diana, but I am so glad they did. The new princess has a spectacular name!
on May 4th, 2015 at 9:59 pm
It’s a lovely name, it will be interesting to see what her nickname will be…Lottie, Carly, Lotta etc. Now that they have a boy and a girl and all the duty names are covered if they have more children it will be intriguing to see if they go with less traditional names. They can’t go too far out since the queen has right of veto and with the immediate succession the farthest out she would probably allow would be along the lines of Maud or Leopold, outside the norm but still with a royal pedigree.
on May 5th, 2015 at 3:39 am
It’s a nice name, but I wish they had gone with a different first – Charlotte is predictable and a bit overdone. I was hoping for an Alice or Mary, then Victoria. Oh well, the sentiment is very sweet though, very well thought out.
on May 5th, 2015 at 5:17 am
I think it was politically savvy to choose the names they did. Diana was beloved so leaving her out completely would have been resented by many of her British fans. It would also have been a difficult first names to live up to. Since Diana was in there though, not choosing a variation of Charles to be part of the name would have seemed like taking sides against his father. And Elizabeth was a given both out of respect and continuity within the royal pedigree.
I would have preferred Caroline as the tribute to Charles but I think in British monarchy there is more history with Charlotte. I would also have preferred Elizabeth as a first name but The Queen has reigned so long that Elizabeth doesn’t feel very fresh among the Royals.
Williams cousins certainly have more options in choosing names… the Queen has great-granddaughters names Isla and Savannah.
on May 5th, 2015 at 10:04 am
I agree with the “safe” name comments, and I was also hoping that Alice would be the first name, but Charlotte Elizabeth Diana is very pretty, just not very exciting. I hope if they have another child they will choose something a little more snazzy like Leopold Philip Henry or Augusta Mary Victoria.
on May 6th, 2015 at 12:01 pm
The name is pretty however, I thought they would have put Mary somewhere in there, as it’s also one of the queen’s middle names.
I do like the name’s Elizabeth and Diana, though.
