Rex Origin and Meaning

The name Rex is a boy's name of Latin origin meaning "king".

Now that many dogs are named Max, it's safe to use this sleek, sexy, regal name again for your child. And with the charm of its final x, its regal meaning, and its offbeat simplicity, Rex is definitely one to consider.

Coldplay's Will Champion used it for his twin son, and Natascha McElhone gave her little boy the doubly cool appellation Rex Coltrane, and Niki Taylor—intentionally or not—gave her son the full name of the British My Fair Lady star, Rex Harrison. Rex ("Sexy Rexy") Harrison was actually christened Reginald. And quite fittingly, Rex is name of a dinosaur in Toy Story.

Other options: the French version Regis or the literal King.

Starelli Says:

Rex Murphy, anyone?

They say the same about Toby, one of my favourite boys' names. I don't think it matters. Some names work for both pets and people. We had a dog called Amber, when I was a kid, and that's popular as a girls' name. I've heard of multiple dogs named Amber, so it kind of is a dog name, but also a human name.

I'm in the same boat. I love this name but DH is convinced it's a dog name :/

EW314 Says:

I LOVE this name. I don't care that people say it's a dog's name - I've met tons of dogs called Charlie, Sam, Tess and Daisy but never a canine Rex. It's a handsome, distinguished, punchy name with a fabulous spiky sound. This will be my first son's name if I can convince DH.

RoddyThlayli Says:

I think it would be okay as a nickname. Maybe for Hendrix, Praxis or Eryx?

ambercat Says:

My neighbor used to have a cat named Rex. If memory serves, the inspiration for his name was that Far Side cartoon where there is a dog in the a car talking to a dog sitting on a nearby lawn and he says something to the extent of, "Ha ha ha, Rex! After we go to the bank and the post office, I'm going to the vet to get tutored!" Even though my cat, Amber, thought that Rex was one ruggedly handsome older he-cat and she used to watch him from the window. I don't know about sticking it on an actual human.

i love this name, but as a clone wars fan i'm fairly biased

Rachel Kent Says:

I love it for a little boy it doesn't give off a pet name at all I think it would be better as a second part of a double barrel name though eg Lincoln-Rex xx

eveyalecia Says:

I know everyone says it's a dog's name, but it actually has a long history of use for people... just look at the list of famous people named Rex! I like it because it makes me think of Rex Harrison and Old Hollywood. As a nickname for Reginald, I like it even better.

illia_raye Says:

This is my husband's name and I love it!

Theodora_Phoenix Says:

I like this name but everyone says it's a dog name.

Catastroffy Says:

I don't much like this for a dog or a lizard, let alone for a person.

The_Supernatural_Hufflepuff Says:

I grew up in a neighborhood with, if I remember correctly, at least three dogs named Rex so this name is not usable to me. All I can think of is a dog not a little boy.
