Gender: Female Meaning of February: "purification feast" Origin of February: Word name or Latin

February Origin and Meaning

The name February is a girl's name of English, Latin origin meaning "purification feast".

If January, April and August are useable and fashionable, why not February? February as a word derives from the Latin februa, which was the name of a purification feast which, coming at the end of winter, would prepare one for the coming spring.

For our part, we like February along with December and January as names for winter babies; we also like the possibility of Airy and Rue as nicknames.

A possible stumbling block, however, is that clumsy "bruary" sound in the middle that no one ever quite gets right.

February is hard enough to learn to spell as a month without making it a name. And how do people pronounce this? I say feb-you-ware-y, but that's not how it's spelled and I assume some people say feb-roo-ary.

Other than that, I like it.

I like this name, although it is not really my style, and I do struggle with it because I alternately pronounce February in one of two different ways: "FEB-ruh-ree" or "feb-BROO-air-ee". I love the nickname possibility of Fairy though!

I think it's very cute and unusual without being too strange, since it's already a real word. My only drawback would be that people (myself included!) don't always pronounce February properly. Not because they don't know better (though some may not, I don't know), but because you just don't take the time to say that "bru" sound. Like, when I say it without thinking, it sounds like "Feb-you-airy." Take a lot of concentration for me to actually say Feb-brew-ary.

But that's just my opinion/what would keep me from using the name, personally. Still think it's cute. And I like a previous poster's nn suggestion of Rory for it. :)

Still prefer January in terms of month names, or August for either gender.

Some month-names work well, but this one just... Doesn't.

It is strictly a month, in my opinion.

Despite this being one of my least favorite months (where I live it's completely wretched), I love this name on either gender! It's unique, but not absolutely bizarre or impossible to spell. If it sounded too long, they could always shorten it to Rory, Ruairi, Feb, Ru or even Fairy!
