Gender: Male Meaning of Darcy: " from Arcy" Origin of Darcy: English from French, d'Arcy

Darcy Origin and Meaning

The name Darcy is a boy's name of French, Irish origin meaning " from Arcy".

Though Darcy is the ultimate Jane Austen hero name, it is rarely used for boys today though it's on the upswing for girls. A shame as it's a handsome, roguish kind of appellation that combines elements of French flair, aristocratic savoir faire, and a soft Irish brogue. And in terms of image, it's one of the quintessential English names for boys.

2 years ago, I signed up for an English class taught by a teacher whose first name was Darcy.
I was shocked to see that my professor was a man as I was entirely unaware that it was also a man's name. I have warmed up to it since then though.

QueenieGuldbaek Says:

I know a boy and a girl named Darcy.

I just named my son this! Darcy Marcel was just right for him. So handsome and strong yet also gender neutral which I like. His twin sister is Sunny Cecilia. I think they complement each other well.

headintheclouds Says:

100% evokes Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice for me. It's definitely more usable and accessible as a first name compared to Fitzwilliam, or Captain Wentworth from Persuasion as the actor Wentworth Miller was named for. I much prefer this on a boy but I can see its appeal as a girl's name.

I like it for a boy or girl. Pair it with a strong, masculine name for a boy, you've got a real winner.
